I've seen something like that before and have strongly encouraged our PTA to do something similar, as we have a really hard time rallying volunteers for fundraisers. Alas, I'm alone in my support of the idea.

I would LOVE that. I'm so sick of the constant fundraisers and sign up lists.

That's awesome! Our elementary schools tried to get donations instead of sales, but it was spectacularly unsuccessful. I bet if they sent this out, they would have had a great response.

My last child just graduated from our elementary school. I am officially no longer on Parent Council. Yay!!
But I did just send this to two friends who are still on council - and our council WAY struggles for volunteers. I dared them to suggest it!!

According to the person who originally posted this, she is speaking to Good Morning America. Maybe more people will embrace this-one could only hope.

If you go to the PTO today website and look up this type of "fundraiser", (Write a Check or Direct Donation) although people say that they would rather write a check and not fund raise, the reality is that the follow through is much much much less than a fundraiser. In other words, many people do not put their money where their mouth is.
Write a Check fundraisers are successful in more affluent districts or communities.
My son's elementary school had 40% of the children on free or reduced price lunches, so no way could parents write a check.

We do this. We call it a "virtual fundraiser" and we raise so much more than we ever did with wrapping paper and cookie dough. The parents are so thankful.

In other words, many people do not put their money where their mouth is. It would be interesting to hear how much they ended up raising. But I think part of the success is not in gently suggesting a donation, but in being frank and giving a specific dollar amount that they expect to receive. Stop with the niceties and cut to the bottom line.

Stop with the niceties and cut to the bottom line. You can list suggested giving amounts, but if the PTO or PTA is a 501c3 organization, "giving a specific dollar amount that they expect to receive" would be problematic in terms of being a "non-profit".

I loved it, saved it and shared it on my FB wall. I did finally just ask "how much can I just write a check for? What is that you really need?" In the same way I only purchase products from "home party" sales organizations because its a product(s) I WANT, I don't do fundraisers unless I truly want the product being sold. I do not have hordes of family and friends to beg from and I would hate even asking if I did.

That's what we do - just give a flat donation.

I was SO happy when my kids' school went to a "no fundraiser fundraiser". They gave us a dollar about -- I don't remember exactly but I want to say it was $50 or so -- and said "not mandatory" and "you can do the wrapping paper instead" etc. so no one would feel like they *had* to pay $50. I was so glad to pay that and be done with it. Plus, 100% of my $50 went to the school instead of just some small percent of the wrapping paper money.

Our elementary school went to straight donations several years ago and it was awesome. They've met their goal every year. The only other fundraising they do is the annual carnival and silent auction. So much better!

Our fundraisers are always events...fall festival, dances, etc. This year, the PA decided that, instead of an individual fee to attend each event, they offered (not required) a one-time fee that covers all of the events. It's a better deal although I do realize that if I attend no events, I've basically donated the money. I'm good with that too. Over 50% of the parents have chosen to pay the flat fee. FWIW...DD attends a private school.

I love this idea! This way the entire donation goes to the school instead of 50% of wrapping paper sales, etc. I think this might work if it was sent out a couple of times a year, as in when they'd be doing a purchase fundraiser. That way people, in my opinion, would give the amount they'd have spent that day/week/whatever, as I can see that people might not donate a large amount at one time.

I would pay double not to have to attend a PTA event.

I so wish our PTA did this. I would much rather donate than try to sell stuff. I actually did donate last year instead of doing one of the fundraisers. My nephew was doing the exact same fundraiser for his school so my family had already been hit up for that one.

Years ago when I was the Pres. Of the PTA I tried this. It was a success. Then the next year the new board decided they liked their kids selling crap to people. I am saving this for our band!

I participated in one wrapping paper sale and said never again! Since then, I have been buying my way out of fundraisers ever since.

I saw it posted on my Facebook page by at least 3 people from different parts of the country, it's really making the rounds! When I was a PTO officer for a few years, I suggested this (donation fundraisers, not this letter-I'm not that clever)and couldn't get any support. My kids are in a different district now and this PTO is doing a donation fundraiser. I gladly sent in my check! School has been in session for 3 weeks and we've almost reached our goal. My kids still have to do fundraiser for band and choir, though. I'm sure the sports teams and other clubs will as well.

I saw this on FB and loved it, what a great idea. My wake up call was the fundraiser where I bought 3 golf ball sized soaps for $10!! Really, what was I thinking? I kept those stupid soaps as a reminder and never again purchased anything I didn't want or need but I did donate the money and had many kids argue with me..but you've got to take the wrapping paper/cookies/donut holes/soaps/ etc.I wish all PTA's would do this.
