Setting the scene: grocery store at the most wicked busy time --right after work. Lines three or four carts deep at every open checkout. Bobby gets in line at a checkstand and after a moment notices the cart in front of him has no person with it. About half the stuff is on the belt. Another customer is ahead of the customer-less cart.
Bobby looks around for the person who is absent. Can't see anyone. When the customer ahead is nearly done paying, Bobby shoves the cart out of the way, pushes the loaded items back to the start of the belt, puts the divider in front of that stuff, and loads his stuff onto the belt.
Jessica comes to the checkstand with her eggs in hand - she only needed to grab that one thing she forgot - and gets upset about Bobby moving her stuff back. Says line cutting is wrong. Bobby tells her she is the rude one for abandoning her cart when the store is this busy and for expecting that everyone will wait while she holds a place in line with her stuff while she finishes shopping.
So kids, who is the asshole?

I'm with Mary.
There have been quite a few times I've found myself in the line with my cart half unloaded and remember something I forgot to grab. I pay for my order and then go back around to get the last item - and go through the express line for it.

not sure-- In that situation, I might do the same thing (leave my cart for a moment) BUT I would tell the cashier what I was doing and that I would make it quick-- then hopefully the cashier would stop Bobby from moving my stuff and butting in front of me.
If it seemed like whatever it was would take a while for me to get, I would definitely go through the line again to get the forgotten item.

I vote Jessica too. And off topic... how are you doing? Maybe you answered in the thread from a few days ago? I'll go check. I hope things are going well and that you're feeling okay as you go through treatment.

It depends...did Jessica have enough stuff on the belt for the cashier to ring up while she was getting the eggs? If yes and she gets back with the eggs without pausing the cashier I would be okay with that and Bobby is the asshole. However, if she put only a few items on and the cashier had to wait for her to get back then I would be frustrated with Jessica.

If the person that was at the front of the line paying wasn't finished, I'd have no problem with the person directly in front of me running to grab an item, as long as they were back before the first transaction was completed and became "their" turn. Now if it was their turn and they still weren't back, I'd also have no problem with other people just moving it along. So I guess it depends on the timing. I'm no help. Sorry.

I think it depends also. If the lines are that long and Jessica forgot one item, she may have time to grab it without slowing the line down and it sounds like she was back before the checker needed to start her order. Even If the checker was starting Jessica's order then Bobby still hasn't lost any time because if Jessica were there in front of him the entire time, his wait would be the same. She didn't slow anyone down. It is a discretionary call. I figure whenever I enter the grocery store I might be there awhile so I don't sweat stuff like this. Is it much different than you waiting in line and the line next to you opens and the people at the back race over when you have been waiting the longest. That is irritating but generally I let it go because it isn't worth the ire. Karma works wonders later.
edit - I forgot to say that Jessica definitely should have apologized politely.

Jessica is the rude one. If I was jessica and forgot my eggs (which wouldn't happen because I have laying hens I would have apologized when I returned to both bobby and the cashier. I surely wouldn't have been upset with bobby he was just trying to keep the line moving at rush hour.

Bobby is the rude one-Jessica doesn't need to be present for the cashier to start putting her items through and she clearly would have been back in time.
I see this ALL.THE.TIME-doesn't bother me in the slightest-how much of a hurry can you be in if you have a cart full of stuff???
if Jessica made Bobby wait while the cashier waited for more things to be put on the belt than I would vote for Jessica as the rude one

Jessica, without a doubt. I've been the dumb person who has forgotten something and ran to get it--and I have zero problem with the person behind me moving ahead of me before I get back. It's happened, no big deal.
I've also done what cakediva has done-- paid for my things, and then gone back to buy something and run through the express line.

Jessica. Even though in this case, she got back in time, how did Bobby know that? For all he knew, she could have abandoned her cart.

However, if she put only a few items on and the cashier had to wait for her to get back then I would be frustrated with Jessica. Any place I've ever worked as a cashier has a policy forbidding ringing an order up without a customer present. Also, cashiers are often graded on how fast they ring an order, starting from the first ring, so if Jessica dawdles and the cashier has to stand and wait, her recorded speed of that order will escalate. Also, a cashier does not know if a customer abandoned their order - believe me, it happens, even when the customer tells you, "Oh, I just forgot the eggs. Be right back." And then they disappear. For these reasons, the vast majority of cashiers do not start ringing without a customer present.

Jessica. Generally when it's busy like that the cashiers aren't messing around, they get through those big piles of stuff pretty quickly. It would be better to stay, get through the line with it and go back through the store for the one thing you missed after loading everything else in the car. At least that's what I do when I boneheadedly forget something I really needed.

Both!!!
But, no, I think Jessica. Who know what she is going for. One thing could be WAY in the back of store. Finish what you have and then go back and get the forgotten item and re-check out. Don't hold up a line.

Well, if it were so crowded, how is it that Jessica had her stuff on the belt and managed to escape to get her eggs with no one in line behind her. I think Bobby might be the impatient asshole.
Hope things are going well for you compwalla.

Once you are in line you should stay there. If you forget something and need to run back through the store, take your cart out of the line when you go to get the forgotten item. People who leave their cart or things on the belt are the assholes. The other assholes are the customers who climb right on top of you and breathe down your neck while you are checking out. I've had a few go-rounds with some of those types.

Jessica is the asshole. Bobby couldn't have taken cuts in front of someone who isn't there. How long was he supposed to stand there and wait? Forever?
