I had an MRI on Sunday and finally got the results Wedneday: no tumors or anything way out of bounds. There were some "anomalies" that are consistent with high bp and migraines (more on that in a minute). Perplexed at what to do, my doctor is recommending making an appointment with a neurologist.
Today was the appointment with an ENT, whom I liked very much. We went over everything up to now and he looked at the MRI results. He did an exam, including numbing my nose so he could put a "camera" up there to look at my sinuses.
His opinion, after finding nothing wrong or out of the ordinary, is that I've had some kind of nerve damage to the "smelling nerves" in my sinus/nose cavity. Really nothing can be done and there's not way to treat it.
His opinion of the MRI results is that the "anomalies" are common for someone my age and with a history of high bp (controlled with meds) and migraines. He says he sees results like this all the time and it's not anything to be concerned about.
I already made an appointment with a neurologist recommended by my family doctor yesterday.
So I'm happy nothing is seriously wrong but will need to adjust to the idea this may never go away.

Well, I'm glad that it isn't anything serious like a tumor, but I'm sorry that it may be something you'll just have to learn to live with.

I must have missed your original post. Have you been to the dentist? I had a smell in my nose for months on end. I even smelled it while in the shower, leading me to the fact that I didn't stink. . I did the ENT doc, but he couldn't find anything. Along comes a root canal on one of my teeth, and, voila, no more smell in my nose.

Murphy, I missed your original thread but my interest is peaked. I suffered irreversible total loss of my sense of smell in my early 30s, went through a boat load of tests and specialists and the most common theory (and they really never did find out for certain) was also nerve damage due to chronic sinus issues, with one specialist saying it could possibly have been air bag injury to the face after an accident. I also have medically controlled high blood pressure and suffer from chronic ophthalmic migraines. I've been poked and prodded and everything in between and no one can say conclusively what happened other than it will never return. I have learned that it is also a marker for Alzheimer's, which freaks me out. I am going to follow your story with interest in the hope that you will have a better outcome than I did!

I'll see if they can fit me in sooner.

Original post: linkUpdate #1: linkI forgot to mention my primary doctor did a whole host of blood tests, even the ENT commented that she practically did his job for him with the tests she had done plus the MRI. All of those were normal.

k8smom: the ENT to mentioned that the fact I could still smell things normally otherwise, and for the most part, my sense of taste is in tact were good things. That when someone loses complete loss of being able to smell anything but the oral hallucination (or anything at all) was far worse.

I am so glad it's not a tumor. Migraines aren't fun. I hope you are able to find meds that work for you! Jen
