Yesterday, my husband, son and I had a fun day out and about and decided to stop halfway through our fun for a quick treat at a frozen yogurt place we've always liked. My husband remembered he had a coupon for 4 free ounces, so he handed it to me as we walked it. The lady working (I'm pretty sure she's one of the owners as I've seen her before) comes up to us and offers us some sample cups, which I graciously take and she notices the coupon in my hand. She says "that coupon is not valid anymore..." and then starts to TAKE IT FROM MY HANDS - rather strongly I might add! I held on because I thought it strange the she was being so adamant about taking the coupon away from me...and I really don't like people grabbing shit out of my hands. I looked at her and said, "there is no expiration date..." She keeps trying to take it from me and said, "well, it was supposed to have an expiration date but it was misprinted and the promotion is now over." So, I said, "that's fine but please don't take things from my hands...we won't use it." Then she adamantly tells me, "well, I wish you would just throw it away."
At that point, I was pretty pissed...I looked at my husband and said, "should we just go?" so we did. We set our cups down and I was going to set the stupid coupon down but then she started to go for it again, so I changed my mind and said, "you know what? I'm gonna keep this." And we walked out the door.
What the hell? Why did she want that coupon from me so badly? If they weren't going to accept it, fine - but she acted like she wanted the thing to burn in hell she was so adamant about getting it from me. And, who the hell grabs things from a customer's hand? I am a business owner and I honestly can not fathom doing that to one of my customers. The coupon is no longer valid, fine, but why so crazy over it?
I'm still flabbergasted that she tried to take it from my hands. But, did I overreact or is that just bat-shit crazy?
ETA: This shop charges about .40 for an ounce of yogurt, so we're talking $1.60 worth of discount. We were probably going to be spending well over $10 even after the discount...I still can't believe that she reacted this way over it!

i guess it just depends on a person's mood and overall disposition
maybe she was having a shitty day
maybe you were in a bad mood
that would be something i'd probably just laugh about later - and i wouldn't stop eating their yogurt
and i probably wouldn't be still wound up over it

No, but I would not go back. She should honor the mistake unless it has been years since you got the coupon. Actually I would bet there is a state law that covers coupons and expire dates. She probably wanted it back so you had no proof that it didn't have an expire date.

I get that it's really annoying as a business owner to have to worry about fighting with customers over promotions that are over or whatever, but I still think she handled it poorly. Shitty day or not. I'm not too wound up over it but I AM still just shocked that it happened. My husband and I have been making jokes about it off and on and we are definitely laughing about it (it's how we do). But we will stop eating their yogurt. There are too many other fro-yo options out there that don't try and rip things out of their customers hands. LOL.

Sounds like bad business for sure. I know part of you says screw her I'll never go back and that there are tons of yogurt shops, but the other part of me says I'll go back when the bitch isn't working and get me my free 4 ounces! Another way if you want to be petty is just go in and get your couple of samples and leave. I work at one of those places and there are tons who come in and never buy anything.

That is really weird that a business owner would try to take something out of your hand. That is crossing a major line into personal space territory IMO. She should have posted a sign with apologies that the coupon wasn't valid instead. I probably wouldn't go back.

It's the only thing that makes her intense desire to get it out of my hands make sense.

That would make me feel like she didn't trust me, like I was going to come in another time and use it.
I think she should have honored it because that can go a long way for customer service.
Heck I went to Michael's yesterday and they had an extra 20% coupon for use from 1:00 to 7:00. It was 12:00, she let me use it.

That is soooo bizarre. Like you said, your sale would be worth her eating the $0.50 discount. Wow.

That is something my husband even joked about...he was like, "if we had more time on our hands, we could go in, get our sample cups, totally overfill them and then leave the cups on the table with the coupon." But, like I said to him, it's not even about the stupid 4 oz! I could care less that we couldn't use it. If she hadn't tried to pry it from my hands and been so adamant that we give it to her, we still would have purchased our treats! Like I said, it was only $1.60 worth of free yogurt...not worth it either way!

Just the fact that the owner got grabby and in my space would be enough to turn me off the place. At that point, the coupon wouldn't even factor into my decision to leave.

It seems like such a stupid move on the owner's part. Not only did she lose the sale for the day, if it were me, she lost all the sales from me in the future because I would choose a different shop and all because she didn't want to lose a couple of dollars. In the end she loses far more, not to mention word of mouth reviews. AND trying to take something out of my hand would not have been cool - that is way to get your own hand slapped. What on earth was she thinking??
I am like you and would be laughing about it today but I would still be thinking about it for sure.
I give my business to companies that treat me decently, value my business. There is enough competition that I have a choice. Even if she were having a bad day, she is an adult and needs to know how to mask it better when working with the public.

That's ridiculous.
I would probably never go back there.
Just to play devil's advocate. There was an error in printing. Either the store requested expiration date and printer missed it or store was sent proof and signed off on it (w/o exp date). Either way - it's a nightmare for them. Every time they see those coupons it reminds them of the mix up. (and reduced revenue) Obviously, she (store manager) is pretty sick of them.
I get that and it would be very frustrating.
BUT....to try to snatch it out of your hand - unacceptable.

Because she acted that way, I would totally keep coupon and hold off until I know she isn't working and use it. But I can be bitchy like that. And as an owner or even manager, I would have gladly taken coupon to make customer happy and to get it off the streets. It isn't your fault they forgot the expiration date.

Trying very hard to put myself in her shoes. I am guessing that the misprint ended up costing them good money and she's stressing about those coupons still being around in circulation. Owning a small business is a so hard. But with that said, there is NO REASON she should be grabbing things out of your hands. Ugh. Huge mistake and that kind of behavior will end of costing them far more.

The owner could have posted a sign in her store alerting potential coupon holders that it was a misprint and is void. Large stores put signs up frequently so they can avoid a controversy (not that some people won't still challenge it).

No, you didn't over react at all!! There's no reason to get grabby and then to continue to be like that as you are all walking out the doors is nuts. I wouldn't be able to drop it and would call to see if that was the owner or over zealous employee going overboard about the coupon. If she was the owner, I'd explain that she lost my business forever. If it turns out she is an employee, mention that they should be trained better and is costing her sales. Then I'd wait a while and consider going back if I were so inclined.

And every time I saw one, I inwardly groaned. But, I never ripped one from a customer's hand!!

That is really weird that a business owner would try to take something out of your hand. That is crossing a major line into personal space territory IMO. She should have posted a sign with apologies that the coupon wasn't valid instead. I probably wouldn't go back. This. First of all, not a smart business move to not honor the coupon. Promotions are a write-off as advertising expense for starters. She just lost $10 (at least, this maneuver could make you decide not to every spend another penny there, as well as the word-of-mouth advertising you could choose to do if you so desiered) worth of revenue over $1.60 deductible cost of doing business. So in dollars and cents, very unwise. The grabby part just makes it even worse. I can't believe the stupidity of some people, really. Knowing me, I would probably made her realize what an idiot she was being by saying something like, "If you want this coupon out of my hand so bad, let's step outside and have a wrestling match for it." Yeah, that is absolutely ridiculous and not something she would take you up on I'm sure, but maybe she'd get how asinine she was being. I don't blame you for being weirded out about the incident. What kind of business owner does that kind of stuff?

If you really want to know if your coupon is valid contact your State Attorney General - probably cause a whole bunch of stink over $1.60 though. From what I could find out online there are many pending cases about coupons (because of Groupon et al) being Gift Certificates and good for at least 5 years from distribution.

Same for me, but I'm pretty sure I won't be in the mood to enjoy a nice relaxing cup of yogurt after that. It would just be so weird it would change the tone of the visit. And then was she going to eye you the entire time you were there. Very odd
