It looks legit, but how do you tell? It says that someone has looked at our tax transcripts. It wasn't us. They are offering a special code for us to use from now on and a year of credit monitoring. Has anyone received a letter like this before?

Sounds like a scam to me. If you really want to know if it's legit just call the IRS.

Take out phrases from the letter and Google the exact wording. If there is a scam letter going around, you might find it that way.

Recall that there was a breach of the IRS system reported recently in the news, where hackers accessed data from 300,000+ tax returns. So it could be legit. I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand and would instead contact the IRS to check.

special code to use where? On a credit monitoring site? Or do you use EFTPS.gov to make personal tax payments? I do know when BCBS had the data stolen that we got a similar letter that gave a certain amount of time for credit monitoring.

The code is to be used to access any further viewing of our tax forms. I do remember hearing of a security breech....calling them today to find out. So aggravating....

There was a hack of the the tax transcripts sights. I'd say this was likely to be legit; credit monitoring is a standard response in hacks like this. Call your local IRS office to check.

Google the contact number, see what comes up.
Also unless the website is a .gov address, it's a fake.

Call the IRS from a number found online (as opposed to one that is given on the letter) and ask to confirm that the letter is legit.
