We are letting my mother use an ipad to see if she wants one, she is 71. My siblings use android devices and we are at a loss on how to set it up so she can text them. The iPad is still on my data plan.
Is there away to fix this? Her cell phone is with Sprint.
Thank you

I cannot get iMessage to work with any android phone. I can text my daughters iPhone from it, but I can not text my husbands or my sons's iPhone from it. No matter what I try - it doesn't work.

The Ipad can't iMessage android. It's not possible. A really good solution is using WhatsApp. It would need to be installed on all the devices, but is awesome for texting, sharing photos and videos.

It doesn't work, yet. I say yet, because supposedly "it's in the works". But I wouldn't hold my breath.
This is my work around - I have an Android phone send texts to my dads e-mail address, he has an ipad. The texts show up in his e-mail like normal. He did have to add my phone number 1234567890@vzwpix.com to his address book so it doesn't go to spam. This is the only way I can send him photos taken from my phone. He can reply to the phone number and it shows up in my text app. We also use this to send group texts about family dinners. Although when he replies it's not as a group but individual texts.

Thank you for all the responses. DH found Textie and so far (one hour) it is working. Everyone you text has to have the app. So for now this is what we are going to use.

Interesting. I get texts from my kids Android phones but I guess that's because my iPad is linked to my iPhone. Never really gave it much thought. I just assumed I could send a message to anyone and if they didn't have an iPhone it was green instead of blue. Kind of a huh and duh moment at the same time.

Until recently I had an iPad and iPhone. I ditched the iPhone for an Android. In order for my text messaging to work, I had to de-register and turn off iMessage. She can send a message to someone who has an iPhone but not an Android. I think there are Apps you can download that would allow her to text to anyone.

Maybe you could all use a messaging app such as Kik or Line? They are both easy to use and I'm pretty sure they'll work with iOS or android.

Use Hangouts. I make calls from my ipad with it to both iphones and android, land lines and even internationally. You can also text from the same app. And it all goes through the same number. You can even video chat.
ETA: The people you text or call don't need to have hangouts but for video chats they do.

my iPad is linked to my iPhone and I cannot get messages from android users Hmmmm. I can use my devices but I don't necessarily understand how they work. I wonder why I can get these texts. My iMessages is on. I don't have a data plan, just WiFi. I get all texts. Oh, I just figured it out. My phone forwards text messages to the iPad. Under iMessage I chose to forward text messages from Fiona, my phone, to Fiona, too, my iPad. Any device under the same account should come up so you could choose to do this. Of course this wouldn't help the OP but I learned something new. Lisa D.
