The Michaels Companies, the arts and crafts retailer that has spent nearly eight years in private ownership, is ready to make its public markets debut. Shares of Michaels were priced on Thursday evening at $17 each, the bottom of an expected range, according to two people briefed on the matter. At that price, the company has a market value of $3.45 billion. It raised about $472 million in the offering, and the shares are set to begin trading on Friday on the Nasdaq stock market, under the symbol MIK. The offering is the culmination of the company’s long journey to Wall Street. Taken over in 2006 by two private equity firms, Michaels sought to go public in 2012. But those plans were put on hold when the chief executive, John B. Menzer, suffered a stroke and subsequently stepped down. Michaels plans to use the money raised in the I.P.O. to help it pay down its considerable debt, which stood at $3.7 billion as of May 3. Its private equity owners, however, have already been paid. Bain Capital and the Blackstone Group, which principally own the company, collected a $714 million dividend last year, financed by debt that Michaels issued after a corporate reorganization. The two firms did not sell shares in the I.P.O. and together will own about 80 percent of the public co Link to full article

Yeah, I don't see Michael's making it. The move from name brand merchandise to almost all Recollections turned me off. I rarely go there.
Hey! We can say Michael's here! Not "M's".

I don't think Michael's is going to go down simply because of scrapbooking. There are a LOT of people who do cakes who shop at Michael's because they carry a great selection and it's simply the only craft store in a lot of places. It would be sad if they closed.

Yeah sometimes you just have to go to Michael's, whether you like it or not. And for some people that is all they have.
I am fortunate to have 2 lss's and a stamp store all within 15 minutes of me. But with the scrapbooking industry going the way it is, I fear that one day all I might have is Michael's.

I hardly buy any Scrap stuff there anymore but tons of kids craft and yarn now. My son is partial to "painting objects". Yes he is three and I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out what in the hell painting objects were. They are the tiny sun catcher kits they sell for different holidays for a buck. He LOVES them.I am pretty sure I will keep them in business with my painting object buying alone They are the only place I can buy Rainbow Loom stuff (without the shipping time) for my niece so until that trend dies they do have that going for them.

That is really my only option now that I am boycotting HL over their birth control policy. I don't do traditional scrapbooking any more, but they have lots of other arts and crafts supplies that I do use.

Time will tell. I rarely go to a michaels and it is even rarer that I actually buy something there. I actually like their recollections stuff but admit to not buying much of it.

I shop all the time at Michaels and I switched to digital scrapping years ago. I buy yarn there. I buy t-shirts and tie dye stuff. I buy soap making supplies there. At the holidays, I buy outdoor and indoor decorations.
Our Michaels always has lines at checkout, so I think that they are doing fine.
