I got an email today about Amazon's new program called Kindle Unlimited for $9.99 a month. I have looked at quite a few titles and I don't see any I can borrow.
For avid readers I can see the advantage but if this just replaces what used to be free, then I'll be very unhappy.

I just saw an article about this but I can't remember where. I don't think it's replacing lending, which is for Prime Members. It's an additional service.

I thought it sounded good until I really checked into it last night. None of the big publishing houses are participating. Maybe if it takes off they will, but I can't see them changing their minds. I decided not to do it.

I just saw an article about this but I can't remember where. I don't think it's replacing lending, which is for Prime Members. It's an additional service. Next to the books that you could borrow as a Prime member, there used to be a note that it could be borrowed for free through the lending library. That wording has disappeared and looks to have been replaced by "Kindle Unlimited". I will have to try to borrow something and see what happens.

Oh, that sucks! I'm probably wrong then. I am a Prime member, but honestly I never really figured out the whole lending library thing. I couldn't figure out which books I could borrow, and I rarely finish a book in two weeks. I got sucked in because the "Hunger Games" books were available, but after that I think I never used the feature!

I try to take advantage of the Prime lending each month. I have also been on the Kindle First list, where I get a soon to be published book free. I have been satisfied with these and right now cannot see a benefit to Kindle Unlimited.
It is sort of interesting to see where Amazon is going. I am using my Prime for video a lot recently and like the music too.

The kindle aspect is one of the things I never use(d) with my Prime membership ... It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

I did a little more research and it looks like the library is still there but it is not easy to find. It's not clear whether the titles in the lending library are the same as the Kindle Unlimited titles.
What does set them apart, aside from the $9.99 a month, is that you do not have to be a Prime member to join you can use it on any device and you can listen to books with free audio. It also includes a three-month free membership to some of the audio books. The lending library is only available to Kindle owners.
You can cancel at anytime and you can try it out for 30 days but I personally don't think it's for me. I am curious as to what the Peas think of it, though.

The prime membership used to have a one book per month limit and you could not read it on anything other than a kindle. Not sure if they increased the book limit on prime to more than one or not. I have prime but don't use it for books...
I did do a quick check of a few authors and the best seller list and few of those books were on the new Amazon book feature.

I checked the list of books for $9.99 and don't think I'll go for it. I have two memberships at ebook libraries (NC and Philadelphia) and that's been fine. I'd rather buy a new book I want every month.
That. Last one I got was "Artful" by Peter David and haven't read it yet.. so I have a little virtual stockpile going.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right place for this answer. Is it like Netflix streaming or like library lending? Will you be able to get any book at any time (streaming) or will there still be limited copies and a wait list (library)?

I was never able to easily find the lending library on the computer. I could access it very easily on my Kindle, but not the computer. On my Paperwhite now when I click "shop" it has a "New Kindle Unlimited" search area.

I never could find the lending library most of the time either and never found much I wanted to read when I did find it. I activated the Unlimited free trial. Not finding much I'd want to read on it either so doubtful I will pay when the free trial is up. I do get a lot of free books and I get the firsts too. I don't like Oyster because I don't really like reading on my iPad. My library isn't great either. Sigh....

I may sign up for the free 30 day trial, but after a quick search for some of my favorite authors, I don't really see much that I will want to borrow.

Any updates from those using the Kindle Unlimited program? I believe I read that you can have 10 books 'checked out' to you at a time and they have no return-by date. Trying to decide if it is worth it. I use BookBub through the daily emails and love it. I am probably spending $9.99 a month or more there, so it might be worth it to me. The books I have bought from there are not from my favorite authors either, but I have found plenty to keep me busy.

I e-mailed Amazon and they said that KU does not replace the KOLL.
But now I can't find the KOLL so I may have to e-mail and ask where it is.

This is pretty much where I am. I was really hopeful about this since my library's ebook selection is seriously sparse, and Oyster didn't pan out for me because I wanted to read on my Kindle (eInk screen). I took a long look the first day it went live, but couldn't find any of the books on my Kindle/Amazon Wish List or my Goodreads ToRead list. From what I could see, it looks like the vast majority of the KindleUnlimited books are from their in-house publishing, and many, many of them were already available in the Prime lending library. I'll probably go ahead and do the trial, but I'm pretty bummed at this point. I'm thinking I need to find a good public library system that will let me pay yearly or something. sigh.
