My 16yo DD is waking up crying from terrible nightmares. Any ideas for how to get them to stop. She is taking BC for headaches and severe PMS.

It may be the bc. Is it a new prescription? I'd take her back to the doctor.

When did the nightmares start? If it was just when she started the bc, I would bet it is the hormones in it.
How is school going for her? Lots of homework/projects/social life/stress? Many times our unconscious minds try to deal with what our conscious minds can't or won't.
Has anything traumatic happened? I guess if it was known it would be obvious, but sometimes teens hold things in.
Is she dreaming about the same thing over & over? Or just random bad dreams? Can you talk about what she's dreaming about?
(((hugs))) to your dd. Interrupted sleep sucks.

I'm wondering if it's hormones?

That is no fun. Did they start when she started taking the BC or before? Is there something that has happened in her life that she is trying to process in her sleep?

Thank you for your responses. She is a very high achiever and does put a lot of pressure on herself. She always has. The bad dreams and nightmares seem to have intensified over the last several months - but with further discussion last night it seems like they may have started around the same time as when she started the BC. Coupled with back to school and her heavy course load - I wonder if that might be what has caused them to be so much more dreadful.
She isn't up yet this morning - but I think last night was better.
