Dd outgrew hers and needs a new one. She wore hers for two years (and now little dd will wear it for two years!!) - it is from lands end. Wondering if there is something more stylish out there that I don't know about or if I should just go back to lands end. Dd is starting to get picky about style.

If quality and style outweigh price, I'd check out sporting good places like REI. North Face or Patagonia.

My girls always wore Columbia or Lands end. They could wear their winter coats for a good 2 yrs, and then handed down possibly to the younger dd, if still in good shape. It's worth it to get good name brand quality here in MN for a winter coat.

Walmart, Kmart, or Sears for us. We don't get anything expensive because they grow out of them so fast. They are 9 and 11yr old boys and aren't to worried about fashion. Maybe when they are teens they will care.

We found great coats at Walmart last year, and have also shopped at Target.

I buy DD's winter coats either at the end of the season for the coming winter in the next size up at places like Kohl's, Target, Penney's or Herbergers, or if I see a nice one at a consignment sale for cheap I pick it up there. We're not there yet with our DD (she's five) but you could also try some tween or teen places like Justice, Aeropostale or Abercrombie.

The only winter coats my kids would actually wear were ski jackets when they were snowboarding. Otherwise it was a heavy lined sweatshirt. We found them at Kohl's and Target. I think Kohl's has a really big section of coats compared to other stores.

Costco in July. Seriously best coats for price & warmth. To hell with style.

What kind of style does she like? I have typically bought coats from Kohl's or similar places, but last year the older two wanted coats that were warm but thin, rather than the puffier coats they had gotten the year before. I ended up finding some for a good price at the Under Armour outlet. Scheel's (similar to REI, I think) has some nice coats but they are pricey. I just found an UA coat at TJ Maxx for my almost 7 year old. It's hit or miss but might be worth checking out.

Do you need a WARM coat, or just a coat? If warmth is a need, I'd look at Columbia, North Face, or Under Armur. REI, Dick's, an outlet, etc are good places to look. Outlets will give you last seasons style for a better price. If warmth isn't a big factor, I'd let her buy a coat whoever she finds one that she likes. She will be more likely to wear it and fitting in is a big thing in the tween and teen years.

Thanks for the replies.
Our winters are mostly rainy. We will have 6-8 weeks of colder weather (not snow cold) and she'll wear the coat for skiing too. Much of the winter she can get away with her heavier rain coat.
I'm in Canada, so my closest REI is 45 min away, and that is crossing the border. Maybe we'll look into making a day trip down.

We need a WARM coat living in the Twin Cities so Lands End is our usual go-to for winter wear.
However I was looking today and had the same feelings about style so I was on the Columbia and North Face site as their style are a little cuter. Neither tell you what temperature rating their jackets are. I was in chat with North Face and I asked and they said they don't rate them that way, but told me which of my three options would be the warmest (still unsure if it will be warm enough for a -10 or so - so passed for now).
Lands End is having a sale right now 30% of regular price items.
Good luck!

I miss shopping for winter coats! I like The North Face coats that I've seen my adult stepkids (who live in a colder place) wear and it its trendy enough to suit my 15 yr old fashion conscious son. But what do I know about winter coats I live in Florida...my kids live in VANS hoodies or North Face hoodies anytime the temp is less than 80 degrees until June . That is a "winter coat" to us.

I just gave my 12 year old boy a Lands End catalog last weekend and told him to pick a new coat and a new backpack.
You just can't beat their quality on those two items.

I ended up ordering the lands end coats (yes, plural, I decided that my little dd was drowning in older dd's old coat) yesterday. I figured I can always return them, but they're a good price right now. I'll check out MEC. The one think I noticed, was that the lands end coats (squail parka) are partially fleece lined (which is nice and cozy) but other coats in even higher price ranges are not.

I bought one for my 12 year old daughter at North Face. It's got a fleecy liner that zips out so it's pretty versatile. She loves it.

The one think I noticed, was that the lands end coats (squail parka) are partially fleece lined (which is nice and cozy) but other coats in even higher price ranges are not. The more expensive coats use technical fibers to keep them very warm but very light/thin. Fleece is cozy, but kind of bulky and not that warm. DS likes things that are fleece-lined in fall and spring, but wants something warmer in the winter (even though we're in Oregon and it's not that cold here).

Consignment. Tis the season, and I have a 9 yo DD, so I hear you about picky. I give her a budget send her down her size isle and say I have to approve everything, but my concerns are does it cover everything and does it fit. You might do a search for consignment sales in your area, I have found FANTASTIC deals on good quality coats over the years.

The last two years and this year I am getting my dd coat at Costco... great price and cute. Not bulky either which she hates... they are good coats!
Oh by the way... I can't justify spending to much on a coat.. last year my dd coat was stolen and thankfully I didn't pay an arm and a leg for it. It's easier to justify getting another coat when you didn't spend to much on one to begin with. Working at a school now.. I can't believe the number of North Face, Columbia, etc. coats are in lost and found.. I can't believe parents don't go looking for these coats. I searched for two weeks for my dd coat and never did find it.. (she is good at keeping track of it.. she was pretty upset when she couldn't find it.)
