My sister's home was robbed today. She is fine. The thieves took her TV, her Macbook Air and her checkbook -- they didn't destroy anything else. My sister has tried to contact her bank and has transferred all funds out of the checking account via on-line access. The police asked if she had "Find My Mac". I think it is a default but I don't know anything else about it. The Macbook Air is my sister's ONLY Mac appliance.
Does anyone know how to use "Find My Mac" -- she says she doesn't have an "apple ID" but she does have the serial number of the Macbook Air. I would think the police would know how to use it
TIA

If it's like "find my iPhone," you have to activate or enable it before the device disappears. I don't think you can do that remotely, although I could be wrong.

Thanks, voltagain. I looked at my desktop -- and I know that I haven't "done" anything to set it up -- and the Find My Mac app is on. I was wondering if that wasn't the default position. But, she said she didn't have an apple ID .... and, frankly, I don't know that I have an apple ID. I would suspect the police would have the ability ...

Police can't help if that "find my Mac" has never been enabled. If you've ever bought anything on iTunes you'd have an Apple ID. Always always set one up

Nothing to offer but sorry to hear that this happened to your sister. It did serve as a reminder to me to make sure I had those features activated on both my iPod touch and macbook - I do now. So... thank you, even under not the best of circumstances.

If you have ever bought anything at iTunes you have an apple id. Please set one up. Yes, your computer came with the program so you don't have to purchase it or download it... but without it being tied to an apple id the signal it sends is meaningless. Every apple product with a "find me" program activated is sending a signal. ALL of the ones that haven't been registered to an apple id send out a nameless signal. The police can't waste time wading through tens of thousands of devices that are unnamed around the world. This would be like saying my young child is missing. I don't have a photo but I suspect the police have the ability to see my child and somehow just know it is mine. For the "find me" to work it MUST be tied to a specific apple id.

If she has purchased anything from the iTunes store, she has an Apple ID. Find My Mac is enabled via the iCloud control panel under the Settings icon. What you/she can try is log on to www.icloud.com with the Apple ID she used with the iTunes store. Once logged on (if possible), select the Find My Mac icon. If the computer is turned on Find My Mac is activated, a dot will appear that shows where the computer is physically located. Good luck!

You can lock it remotely or have it emit a sound.

Thanks, Voltagain -- I fixed my "Find My Mac" --- so I should be set -- but I actually think I was okay. Nonetheless - I checked and did fix the "rescue" email address! And I sent that article to my sister -- tho' I just don't think that she has purchased anything from the iTunes Store
Thank you, everyone, for your attention and information!

Even if it's a free app, she'd have to have an iTunes account
