When I was in middle school, my mom told me about this book that she had read in school, and recommended. I found it at our library. As a child, I loved books about horses, dogs, and wolves.
This one was particularly moving and memorable. Years later I picked up an ex-library hard copy with dust jacket at a yard sale. I found the VHS copy of the 50s movie more than a decade ago, and bought it, but no longer have a machine to play it on (though I kept the movie).
I unexpectedly came upon it on t.v. tonight and I have excitedly set it up to record on my PVR.
I was wondering whether any other Refupeas are familiar with this one. I have only seen a basenji dog once IRL, more than a decade ago, and the owner was surprised that I could identify it, since it is not a widely known breed. Most people that I know or talk to IRL are unfamiliar with both the breed, and even if they know the breed, with the book/movie.
Is anyone else familiar with this book or the subsequent movie? It has always been a favourite and for a ficitional book really tugged at my heartstrings.

Timing! I had just flicked thru the guide and saw this movie coming up on Turner Classics. I just went back and set the PVR! I love animal stories too but have never heard of this one. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes! It was on Turner last year, I believe, and Dh really liked it, but missed the beginning. I looked for it on Amazon and found a DVD for his birthday. I'm surprised I hadn't read the book as a kid, I read every horse and dog story I could get my hands on! It's a sweet tale.

One of my favorite childhood books! It was written by my mom's high school boyfriend's uncle. I still have my autographed copy.

I think I read part of the book decades ago- like part of it was in a reading book in elementary school. After reading it, I met some people with a Basenji- very sweet dog, and she never barked.

Hmm. I tried to watch it but I couldn't get past how rough the kid was with the dog. Just made me cringe. I guess things have changed over the years!

mom2rjcr, I am soooo envious that you have a copy autographed by James Street! That is so cool! nitad, I don't really remember that. I started watching it this morning before work, but didn't get too far and will try to watch the rest this weekend.
