I don't add anything to my plates. If you are using metal plates, you might need a piece of rubber (some use a piece of a cheap mouse pad). I love love love my Cuttlebug for embossing! Here is an instruction tutorial

Another one who doesn't add anything for embossing. And I've used many different brands with no problem at all.

I'm not talking about the folders. I use those all the time but some of the thinner dies I guess similar to spellbinders don't work well and in the package of one set I bought at Tuesday morning it sounds like you are supposed to use something different but the directions aren't clear.

Hmmm. I just used a spell binders die with the sandwich of A plate, C plate, die facing up, paper, B plate. It cut beautifully. You could try a shim of card stock between the A and C plates to make it a bit thicker.

That is what I was thinking of. I looked in my manual but I think it came out before these dies and even some of my tim holtz ones have an issue. I may just need an extra sheet so those but thought it needed something soft for the embossing ones and I didn't want to ruin my die. I was considering that I may need s new machine and was going to add it to my wish list but think I will wait a bit.

I got a green Cuttlebug embossing mat from Anna Griffin when I ordered the AG dies thru HSN (may be it was last year or so) and that's what I have been using when I run the dies and want it embossed as well. Amazon has the Cuttlebug embossing mat and it's free shipping. embossing mat

First you cut with the following sandwich:
White spacer plate, C plate, die facing up, cardstock, B plate. Add a cardstock shim on top before running it through if you need.
To emboss the cut, carefully transfer the die with the cardstock still in it to the following sandwich. You do NOT want to remove the cut design from the die to see if it embossed well. It doesn't. For the embossing:
White spacer plate, B plate, die facing up with cut design still in it, one or two rubber gasket embossing mats, then the B plate. Cardstock shim if needed on top.
It is usually a two step process to cut and emboss with the thin dies. The problem is that if the cut design slips or is removed and put back into place, it may not emboss correctly.
There is a company (Memory Box, I think) that recommends adding waxed paper to the die before putting the cardstock on for cutting, then add a very thin metal shim prior to the top B plate. That way cuts well and the cut design is easily removed no matter how detailed, but getting the cut to stay perfectly aligned (when you transfer to a B plate base and rubber gaskets before putting the second B plate on) is difficult.
