I had something like this pop up on FB yesterday. I know I've heard of doing this but have never tried it myself. Has anyone actually done this? Results? Favorite combinations? And yes, I realize I'm admitting to using boxed mix instead of a scratch recipe, but I am not opposed to taking the cheap and easy way out upon occasion.

Yup Diet coke with chocolate cake - not bad, would make again. Diet orange with white cake mix - I did add 2 eggs whites to this and it made for a more moist, less crumby (as in crumbs )cake. Kids LOVED this one as did DH. We put cool whip on for frosting. Reminded me of a creamsicle. That's all I've done.

Yep! I've done a rootbeer with a spice cake, and a cherry coke with a devil's food. Both were good.

I did it in Jr. High..using Jiffy Cake Mix (do they make it anymore?)!!
We used 1/2 can of pop. It was great! White cake mix and grape pop! Then of course we had to have purple frosting. Yes, jr high!!

I did it with the orange soda (I think it was diet) and cake mix. It was okay but very crumbly. I think I threw most of it away.

That doesn't sound like enough liquid. I'm guessing that's why some people are saying it's crumbly.
I know there is a recipe for a cola cake that has been around forever but there is more than just the cola and the cake mix in it I believe.

I used cherry coke with chocolate cake. I add cheery pie filling to a pan with cherry coke over top of it. Cook it until the coke is reduced and serve as a warm topper to the cake. Flipping AMAZING!!!

I did chocolate cake with sprite. It turned out fine...would have preferred coke, but I used what was on hand. I did frost it, it was very crummy the first day, but the next day it was moist. The sprite added just a hint of , you could tell something was there, but not what it was. In a pinch (like have no eggs) it works.

I haven't tried any of the recipes in the OP. But I make a from scratch pound cake that uses 7-up (or other lemon-lime soda). It' this one from PW => PW Perfect Pound Cake. It's really good. And FTR, I'm not opposed to taking the cheap and easy way out either. I love me a good boxed mix and frosting.

That recipe looks really good, GiantsFan. I'm wondering if I can eliminate the lemon flavouring and just use regular vanilla?

I haven't used it in a cake mix, but I've used orange pop and root beer in place of beer in a beer bread mix. Delicious.

Just a healthy dose (tip the bottle without measuring) of pure vanilla extract.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll give it a whirl sometime in the next few days. I wonder why some are dry and some aren't? I'll try to grab a moist cake mix just in case. I appreciate the simplicity and like that it doesn't require eggs or oil. Cook it until the coke is reduced and serve as a warm topper to the cake. Flipping AMAZING!!! Sounds yummy! Sort of a black forest shortcut! I haven't used it in a cake mix, but I've used orange pop and root beer in place of beer in a beer bread mix. Delicious. I like the bread idea. Hmmm... I haven't tried any of the recipes in the OP. The closest I've come to making pound cake is opening the Sara Lee box all by myself. Yep! I've done a rootbeer with a spice cake, and a cherry coke with a devil's food. Both were good. Root beer & spice might be the first thing I try.

There's one on the graphic above and they called it Purple Cow! I remember the little Jiffy boxes but have no idea if they're still around! I'll have to take a look out of curiousity. They had frosting mix, too. I know their cornbread is still around!

That's how we make a " dump cake " in a cast iron casserole when we go camping. Use regular pop not diet

We've done these combinations for years in Girl Scouts, baking them in box ovens (box covered inside with tin foil, heated with briquets, turned upside down, over cake pan placed on empty soup cans). Not bad!

If I recall we all chose a flavor of pop.....cherry, grape, maybe green...then all of us mixed up frosting to match the flavor of the cake.
It made for a colorful home ec class!

No I haven't tried soda with packet mixes, but I'd like to give it a crack.
I always use lemonade (Sprite) in my scone mix.

I used a can of cream soda in a spice cake mix...when the cake was done, I poked holes in the top and poured a can of sweetened condensed milk over the top and chilled it for a bit. Then I made a frosting/icing...when heated up, it tasted like a cinnamon roll!

Lemon cake with Diet Sprite
My favorite thought is Spice Cake with just a 14oz can of pumpkin. I use this for muffins all the time.

I used a blue cream soda in a vanilla cake mix for my nephew's Seahawks birthday party and they were very good. I am a bit of a baking snob and don't use mixes for anything, but I had to make a lot of cupcakes for his friend party since it was at a swimming pool and there were lots of parents as well as kids. I had several parents ask me for the recipe! No one believed me. I used a Betty Crocker moist mix, I don't care for blue cream soda but the texture of the cupcakes was very moist. I made a vanilla chocolate Coke batch too and those were super delicious.
