This is a cool article about a development in understanding why humans and chimps have suchg different facial features, despite having such a high degree of genetic similarity.

Thanks I think this whole topic (mitochondrial Eve, genetic drift etc) is fascinating. I just read "The Journey of Man" and happened to catch a NOVA special last week on the Rising Star dig in South Africa about the new discovery, homo naledi. It's incredible what people (who are smarter than me) discover. Uncover. Unearth.

I really liked it. The entire topic is so engrossing and the author did a great job explaining the complex subjects in a way that a layman would understand (i.e. me ) I learned so much about how we all originated in Africa, why our "Adam" and "Eve" are 60,000 years apart, what our first ancestor would have looked like, how the first population traveled, etc. One of my favorite ideas was that "our" Eve wasn't the only one, she was just the luckiest. That's my idea of magic in the world. So so much is just waiting to be discovered about where we came from.
