So I know that the back lighting on cell phone, tablet and laptop screens can mess with your sleep. What about the ereaders with light? Reading in bed before I sleep is part of my routine but I'm wondering if the use of the ereader (Kindle Paperwhite) is no different than using my backlit tablet?

I have a Voyage and DH has a Paperwhite. Both are e-ink and have the built in light. We have no problems with sleep or eyestrain.

if screen lights disrupt your sleep patterns it will apply to all screen lights. It is the blue spectrum in the light (which lets you see the best) So if you are avoiding screens you'll need to avoid e-readers as well.

Personally, when I am on my iPad at night I find I stay awake much later, but when I'm reading on my Kindle Paperwhite I fall asleep sooner, pretty much the same as if I'm reading a book with a lamp on. Maybe sooner than with a lamp on, since with the Paperwhite I don't have to have a light on in the room and there is less light. Reading helps me fall asleep and the Paperwhite is the best thing ever!

Slightly OT, but has anyone tried any of the blue light blocking apps? What do you think? I've been considering using one. Which do you recommend?

I have a Nook and a backlit Nook and I less trouble falling asleep after reading from the backlit one. I actually have a cover for it that folds over, so like a regular book when I have read enough I close the cover.

Supposedly the lighting on the Paperwhite is different and doesn't cause eye strain or sleep problems. I forget what they call it, but it's not technically backlit and doesn't have that blue glow.
I haven't had any issues with mine.

I haven't had any issues with mine. I haven't had issues with the Paperwhite either. And it's my third Kindle. The first two were regular Kindles. My iPad bothers me, though.

The difference with the Kindle Paperwhite versus tablets and phones is that it is not BACK-lit, it is SIDE-lit -- this method of lighting was specifically developed not to cause eye strain, because the light isn't coming out at you, it goes across the surface of the device. If you go on Amazon to the Paperwhite page, you can read a really long description about the lighting, but that's the gist of it. The little lights are built into the sides of the device. It's amazingly clever, and of course, you can adjust the lighting with just a finger tap, as needed. I LOVE my Kindle Paperwhite!!!

Thanks for the input everyone.
