This is a s/o of the thread about Yelp and whether or not Peas used Yelp. I have had mixed results, but use it mostly when we travel to find restaurants and attractions. So, if you don't Yelp, what other app(s) do you use when you are on the go and what do you love about them? If it matters, I have an android phone...

I'll ready Yelp, but if you leave anything less then 3 stars, I immediately click your profile and try to determine if you're a pain in the ass troll or legitimately had crap service.

I've heard first hand that Yelp is relentless with restaurants that won't advertise. They remove the great reviews and the restaurant ends up with 3s. Not good at all in terms of. Business practice

I use Urban Spoon or Eater for restaurants.
Trip Advisor for everything else.

Trip Advisor, plus Yelp is blocked at work, TA isn't.

Love TripAdvisor. We use it every time we travel, and I usually leave reviews for places when we travel.

Another vote for TripAdvisor. I have heard too much crap about Yelp and I know one person who had a review removed so I wonder how many more have had the same fate.

I have an android but I'm so old school I just check things out the old fashioned way. Verbal way of mouth or going in and trying it out myself I love just stopping at new places that I see when I'm out and about in different towns.

I am not, however, a five star, fine dining experience kind of restaurant shopper. I like the dives, the bbq joints with picnic tables, the places that have all the big pickup trucks in front of them, the places that are off the beaten path so I would guess that Yelp wouldn't help me anyway. If I am in a new town, I want to go where the locals go, not the tourists. It can be a crap shoot of course, but that is part of the fun-and if worse comes to worse, there is always a McDonalds on the way back to the hotel. ETA: I am also not above and stopping at the smokers in church parking lots for lunch either...some of the bbq comes from the church lunches.

Like anxiousmom, I like to ask around. I like to explore. When traveling, I'll ask desk clerks where they like to eat - not what's "popular" for tourists but where they like to go. I raid the brochure rack and scour the magazines in the hotel rooms to find recommendations. Sometimes they're poopers and sometimes they're winners - either way it's an adventure and ends up being a good memory, again, like anxiousmon says, there's always a McDonalds somewhere nearby. All Yelp has ever done is give me a yuppie/hipster view of their experience and expectations. And I find that most of these people are looking for some kind of mythical, perfect place. Where I'm often OK with places that some of these Yelp writers would have stroke walking through the door.

When I'm traveling, I use trip advisor. I always discount the reviews that are too over the top and say something like "this was the best restaurant in the whole world" or "this was the worst restaurant in the whole world."
I have a friend who owns a restaurant and she told me that some restaurant owners & their family members create multiple accounts on review sites and praise their own restaurants and slam their competitors.

I think this is why I don't trust the opinion/rating sites very much. I often wonder how much is real feedback and how much is paid for, friends/family or even bored people playing on the internet.

I also always use tripadvisor when traveling or in my own city. I forget to or just don't leave my reviews though.

Well when eating out near home (within an hour) I usually just go by word of mouth. Rarely do I check reviews.
When travelling I use a bunch of resources. Trip Advisor, Urban Spoon, Yelp, Google reviews, reviews on restaurant's FB page, just Googling and finding blog mentions etc. I disregard those that are on either extreme and go by the average.
I must say that I don't care for Yelp as much. They don't seem to have many reviews/or are bad reviews only. Plus as mentioned above they seem to be more geared to the younger/Hipster type. Not long ago I was looking for something and saw a review for the Bob Evans in our town. Young hipster looking guy giving it two stars and not saying anything specific about this location just mentioning the country decor, older patrons, etc. Um...what did you expect from Bob Evans? It wasn't scathing really just pointed out the obvious and seemed silly to me to give it two stars for what it is and everyone knows it to be. It may not be your thing but a lot of people, yes probably many older people, love it. But then I never review chain restaurants. I guess I might if it was a really outstanding or poor experience but otherwise, I think most people know what they are going to get when they walk into an Applebee's etc.

TripAdvisor is my most frequently used review site overall. I also find OpenTable good for dining reviews as well as making reservations.

It is sort of like having Christmas while you are away, everything is a surprise some you like and some you don't. And it does not bother me to have to stop into McDonalds.

TripAdvisor is my go to site. But, asking friends/acquaintances/co-workers can also be great.
