I've heard this a bunch of times lately, usually related to weather. "Cooler/hotter today in the north east even up in to New England." When did we start considering New England not part of the north east (seems like when they are referencing the north east it ends in New York). Just something that has been bugging me.

It isn't that New England isn't in the northeast, it is the fact New England is a region with its own identifier [New England] that does not include other states that are also in the north east but don't have another more specific regional identifier.
My "huh?" is why the midwest is so far to the east it isn't west or middle of the nation geographically.

They must be talking about Connecticut, NY, NJ, PA. Everything north of them is New England. Maybe they should say Mid-Atlantic?
ETA: Oops, Connecticut is part of New England.

That is weird, I would think you might say New England when you are only referring to that part of the Northeast, but not the way you described. My pet peeve is when Michigan is referred to as being in the Midwest. It is not. It is part of the Great Lakes Region along with Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The Midwest is the Dakotas, Nebraska, etc in my mind.

That is weird. Did you just see the strange look on my face while reading that? lol.
The Census Bureau has defined the Northeast region as comprising nine states: the New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont; and the Mid-Atlantic states of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

I always thought that the north east was New England. I would maybe include New York in that. But not New Jersey or PA. I just thought it was weird how they talked about the weather in the north east and also in to New England.
Just one of those "huh" things I guess.

You're right - it's not correct. I live in New England (CT) AND in the northeast.

The Midwest is generally what was the original Northwest Territory established in 1787. The states are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and eastern Minnesota. The country grew, and they became Midwest.

From the Dakotas to Kansas is at least in the middle... though not really west. What about Colorado? Most of the state is flat and a lot more like Kansas then like the other "mountain states"

Not to add to the confusion, what about the expression "Down East" that refers to the northern part of Maine's coast?
Insofar as Missouri, my husband was born and raised in St. Louis. He considers himself midwestern.
ETA: Growing up in NYC, I always found the mid-Atlantic designation for states to be confusing, West Virginia is landlocked!

I'm from the Pacific Northwest which includes Washington and Oregon always. And depending on who you talk to all or part of Idaho. And a few will even include Wyoming and Montana. So my question is... what about California? Is CA the Pacific Southwest? (Not a term I've ever heard used.) It's not usually included as part of the SW is it? Is California ever assigned to a region?

Not to add to the confusion, what about the expression "Down East" that refers to the northern part of Maine's coast? Downeast is a maritime term. When sailing to Maine the prevailing winds came from the southwest, pushing schooners “downwind” in an easterly direction. As for the OP, I kind of interpret "in the northeast even up in to New England" to mean "even the New England/most northern part of the northeast."

It is, but it isn't considered part of the Northeast. It is south of the Mason-Dixon line, so that may be the reason.

Well in Little League World Series Kentucky is part of the Great Lakes Region - we are at least 5-6 hours away from a Great Lake. People here claim the South but we were a border state and never succeeded.
Heck we aren't even a state, we are a commonwealth.

I think that California is considered part of the West Coast which technically includes Washington and Oregon, though many would prefer to think of it as an island unto itself...a jumbo Catalina! People back east from whence I came (NYC) refer to it as the West Coast.
