I don't wear lipstick even though I know I would look better with it on. I don't like the way it feels or tastes on my lips, and no matter what kind I've tried it doesn't stay on. That said, my youngest son is getting married this weekend and I feel like I should suck it up and wear lipstick.
My question is - how do you pick the right shade? Do you go with something that you think looks well with your coloring or do you try to match what you're wearing? Another question - can anyone recommend a brand that won't break the bank? I hate the thought of spending a lot of money on something that more than likely will never be used again.
Yeah, I know I probably should have addressed this sooner than three days before the wedding. What can I say, I'm a procrastinator!
ETA - thanks so much for all the recommendations. Due to time restraints I decided to go with L'Oreal. But, I might give some of the others a try in the future.

If you're not confident I would go to a professional. Most decent brands (say Bobbi Brown for example) do several 'textures' and also will be able to guide you on colour. Bobbi Brown in particular are great at the no make up make up so it won't need to look garish and too 'out there' because then you'll just feel so self conscious and that's not what you want for such a special day

I don't like lipstick that tastes weird or doesn't stay on. I've had good luck with some from Covergirl the Colorlicious line. It stays on fairly well, isn't gunky or have a taste and it's not glossy or "too much". I wear it everyday at work. I apply it in the morning and then at lunch I usually have some of the color left on my lips. It gets wiped off at lunch though.

I wear Maybelline Color Sensational lipsticks. I think they feel most like balm, although I agree with other posters... staying power of any lipstick is questionable. I read an article once that said newbies should start with lipsticks that are closest to their lip color or just one shade darker. It provides a bit of enhancement and allows for getting used to using/wearing lipstick. Try something from "The Buffs" collection: www.maybelline.com/products/lip-makeup/lip-color/color-sensational-the-buffs.aspx

I am a bit of a lipstick whore, and there are many out there that don't feel or taste like anything. My suggestion would be something like a Clinique Chubby Stick... It gives a subtle wash of color but feels like a lip balm/chapstick. My favorite color is Voluptuous Violet, which just darkens my cool-toned lips slightly. (You won't have purple lips, I promise.) If you go to a Sephora, you can try them all and find one you like. They are $17. If you really want to keep the price down, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Burt's Bees Lip Crayon. My favorite color there is Hawaiian Smolder, although I've only tried that and Niagara Overlook. It's $9, and can be bought at Target. It's not as sheer as the Clinique ones, so it will last longer, but is a little bit more drying. Both of those are very forgiving for someone who isn't used to wearing lip color, and they are small and handy and easy to reapply if you need. ETA: I do have lip products that will last 12+ hours without needing a touch up, but they are generally more drying and uncomfortable to wear. If you add a lip balm over the top, it decreases the longevity.

I wear Loreal Infinity lipstick because it stays longer than most and it doesn't have that lipstick feel. I wear Teaberry which is a very neutral shade and then just touch up occasionally with a pinkish sheer gloss.
ETA: I meant Loreal Infallible! Sorry!

I'm really lucky in that I have a skin tone that can wear pretty much any shade of lipstick ... I've got tonnes of it in every shade but my favs are all pinks When I want to splurge I go with MAC ... otherwise I really love L'Oreal because it doesn't taste gross

If you find a lipstick that goes well with your coloring, it should be a safe bet. You may want a little bit darker just to give your face a bit of color.
This is a special day. You deserve to feel special and be a part of wedding madness. Go for it!

I've never been a lipstick fan, but I wear the Burt Bees Colored Lip Shimmer. It tastes minty and comes in a few shades and isn't heave at all. It's not expensive and seems to last forever. I highly suggest them!

You def want to match to your skin tone -- and I recently went for a make-over and the cosmetician recommended also co-ordiating/matching to eye make up.
I bought a coral lipstick from Smashbox; it was $25 but worth it, I think. I've been wearing it today for six hour already and it still looks great -- even after lunch and two cups of coffee!

I love lipstick, but am also picky about any flavors, smells and some textures.
I'd definitely go to a professional for suggestions if you need color help. It can save you time and money.
My current pics now are stains because they last for hours but I can wear good old moisturizing Chapstick with SPF on top. Lately the IT brand liners are favorites, somedays I cover entire lip.

One key question I have for you - what don't you like about the feel of lipstick? Because there are all kinds of formulations now, you can avoid the things that bug you most. That might help us point you in a good direction.
You definitely want to go with your coloring in terms of color choice, but make sure it doesn't clash with what you wear, either. If you're wearing anything with a strong color that might clash (think coral, fuschia, red, burgundy, pink), then you probably need something with similar tones or that is nude and neutral (the phrase they use is "My lips but better."). Notice I said similar tones, though - you don't want to match your coral dress to your coral lipstick.

I have around 80 lipsticks. Everything from NYC to YSL. NYC lipstick from Walmart (2/$3 in Canada) is surprisingly good quality! Give that a try..pick up a couple colours and experiment.

It might be worth trying wearing a lip pencil by itself in a nearly lip colour shade. Lip pencil lasts for ages on the lips and you can't really feel it on at all. I also think every lipstick looks even more fabulous with a lip pencil underneath, both defining the edge of the lips, but also filling in the whole lip to make the lipstick last longer.

I have used Clinique's Butter Shine Lipstick for years. I like that it's really more like a gloss with a bit of shimmer, and it doesn't really have a "taste". The color I use is called Delovely, which is a browny-pink, a little darker than my natural lip color. It comes in an awesome silver bamboo-styled case.
I think dark matte color really only looks good on people with large full lips; reds especially on small thin lips can look harsh and I hate that dry feeling that a lot of lipsticks have.

It does stay on longer than most, but I found that it dried out my lips terribly. Even with the extra gloss....

i have used the same color for about 20 years . it started with wet n wild blackest red when they stopped the color starting looking for something close and anytime i found something i bought 5-6 tubs.
I alway color in my lip with a lip pencil then put the lipstick on over that last pretty long.

Try this, it literally does stay on all day: I love these. I like how they are dry and not wet like some lipsticks and I can't bite it off in no time. They were on sale a couple of weeks ago so I got some more!

It's your son's wedding? Please consider this lipstick line-Lipstick Queen. You can find them at Ultra and the ladies that work there are very helpful at helping you find a shade that suits your complexion and hair color. You should choose a shade of lip color this way, not by your outfit. Lipstick Queen are amazing lipsticks and are made for those of us who hate lipsticks, and were never able to wear lipsticks before. The colours truly do last, and they nourish the lips with good for you ingredients that feel wonderful going on and don't taste nasty. There are several different formulas. I would not go with a matte formula (that is without any shine whatsoever) because it shows every single wrinkle and is best for very young girls, so avoid the Sinner Line. The Saint Line has a bit of shine and is like a light balm with color. These shade are $24.00 each but are worth every penny-think about it, it is your son's wedding and there will be photos taken that will last a lifetime. It is worth it! The most moisturizing line is the New Frog Prince lipstick which is green, BUT turns a lovely rose shade on your lips. Try that one on in the store. I have that one and adore it. Medieval is a Red that is designed to flatter everyone, not as moisturizing as Frog Prince but better than Sinner. Sailor is a blue lipstick that turns a berry on your lips it's almost as moisturizing as Frog Prince. Butterfly Ball is another line that is more moisturizing than Sinner but less so than Sailor or Frog Prince. They are truly gorgeous with beautiful color and a gorgeous shimmer. I have two in Moment and Trance. Truly these lipsticks don't feel anything like lipsticks on your lips-they feel better than most balms, but the color is there and stays there. They truly are very different. The woman that makes them, Poppy King, decided to make them because she couldn't find the lipstick she wanted on the market. So she started making these herself. Like I said at Ulta you can try these on, not just take a chance looking at a sealed package. You can read all about this line at www.lipstickqueen.com. I've been using them for about a year and just love them. Before this I could never wear lipsticks because my lips are very dry due to hypothyroid. I also didn't like the way other lipsticks felt on my lips. These, well you can't even feel that they are on, except that your lips feel wonderfully moisturized and better! Debbie in MD.
