Send her to the odd lots place. They have great prices there for their generic brand - and it's good.

I need an education in things Keurig! Dd has asked for one for her apartment when she moves out at the end of the year. She drinks coffee, dh and I do not. She just buys coffee from Starbucks and other places (like the cafe in her studio). She won't have a convenient Starbucks when she moves (thank goodness) and wants to make her own coffee so she asked for one. I have no clue. Don't understand why a mini one isn't as good as a bigger one or anything else! LOL. Trying to make a long story short - the mini only holds enough water for one cup, so you have to refill it every time you want coffee. And wait for it to heat up. The larger Keurigs hold one cup of water in a holding tank and it is hot and ready to go, no waiting, unless you just turned it on. the mini uses as much water as you put in it - so unless you measure it carefully every time, the coffee varies in strength and flavor. And there are no markings inside the machine, you have to use a measuring cup. And, if you accidentally put in too much water, it goes through the brewer and overflows the cup. The larger Keurigs have a choice of what size cup you want, and that's all that it brews at a time. They hold enough water in the reservoir so that you only have to refill after 6-8 cups. There is not enough price difference between the mini and a regular Keurig (the basic model, not the one with bells and whistles) to make hassling with the mini worth it. JMHO!

Ok n pretty sure I can walk into the kitchen right now, push a button, and have hot coffee in a minute. The water in the reservoir is not hot, but the water in the machine is. If you turn the machine off, it takes more like 4 minutes for that first cup, because the water in the machine isn't already hot.
I have a regular full size Keurig not a 2.0 and I always turn it off when I'm done with it. It has never taken more than 1 minute for my water to heat. The water doesn't stay hot in the machine. It only heats the water that is being used, the water in the reservoir is cold. What model do you have?

That would cost me nothing because I'd make my daughter pay for it herself. We've taken care of her big ticket items and she has a meal plan. I'm not a fan of the Keurig. I drink too much coffee for it to be cost effective and I think all those little plastic cups are bad for the environment, so the reusable option is an improvement. At best it would be a care package item that I'd send and then be done with it. I'm assuming your daughter is a college student. Somebody told me that the inventor of the machine , hates it because of the cups.

hop2, DH's work has the K2 and there is apparently a work around for the cups. You might try googling it.

Especially if I AM following their 'rules' and buying their crap. It's really the principle of it ya know. I've even fooled it to give me 10oz of hot water but again I shouldn't have to.

No one in my house drinks coffee, so I am clueless! So it's not like a regular coffee pot where you have a pot and pour from that into a cup? It sounds like it would be expensive to buy new cups for each cup of coffee.

My daughter dorm doesn't allow coffee pots because of the the warmer. I'm confused about the 'intense cleaning' you speak of. ? My Keurig just turned 4 years old. All I've ever done is change the little filter thingy in the tank (not even close to as often as recommended, and run a bottle of cleaner through it occasionally. Ok, twice to be exact, lol. I guess I'm a rebel when it comes to cleaning it but seriously I use that thing all day and all night (switch to decaf in the late afternoon) and it's just now starting to act funny sometimes and that has something to do with the power switch I think. Keurig is my indulgence. I'm so spoiled by it that I'll be ordering another the day it dies, while using the mini one we have for travel until my new one arrives. Thanks for the tip above about not getting the 2.0!

Thanks for the tip above about not getting the 2.0! It probably depends on which one you have. I have a Vue that is fine. We use a refillable cup. I was hoping to be able to also use it for hot water (hot chocolate/tea) but there are coffee grounds in it. Our other Keurig (don't know the model) has been a piece of crap PITA TBH and we have only used filtered water in it, changed the filter etc and it works randomly. I've considered taking it apart to see what is going on as there is nothing to lose at this point.

Be warned if you buy the reusable (purple) K-cups advertised for use with the 2.0 Keurig. After the first few times, they stop wanting to work and you get an error message.
It's fixable with a hack involving a piece of index card and a yellow highlighter, but DH is the one who did the hack and I've no clue how he did it. (It also unlocks cup size features of the 2.0 that make it much more versatile.)

The refillable ones are messy and make murky coffee, IMHO.
I guess I don't get the tone here. I LIKE doing special things for my kids and loved sending them care packages when they were at college. The cups are so inexpensive at Costco, a Winco, Walmart... I wouldn't think you'd be expected to provide cups for all 3 girls or all the time but why not send a box as an occasional treat?
The Keurig is also great for hot tea, cocoa, ramen, cup of soup and defrosting frozen breast milk! LOL! Hopefully the last one would be a future use after college!

I love brewing 14 ounce coffee.

For those of you who said your kids use it for the hot water, it would be a heck of a lot cheaper to buy one of those plug in hot water things. You fill it, plug it in and in about one minute you can have all the hot water you want, no open heat surface so the schools would allow it. My dd drinks coffee and I will get her a mini Keurig if she wants/needs one but if she drank tea and wanted hot chocolate/soup only then I would only buy the kettle. You can buy them for almost nothing.

I buy my daughter the cups in bulk from Sams and send them in her care packages. For a special treat, I get the flavored ones at the Kuerig store. I assume she shares with her roommates, and that they share their stuff with her, but I really don't know. I figure they are old enough to work out whether they want to share.

Daughter got her box. She is happy, probably because I sent a couple cliff bars with her coffee.

I aim for 50 cents a pod when I purchase for myself. I look for sales, and I watch my favorites on Amazon. I'm not an every day coffee drinker, so I just try to keep a variety on hand.
