I'm curious as to whether she let her college roommate know where she was headed at night and what time she would expect to be back. To me that just seems like something you do, you let whomever you live with know your approximate whereabouts and when you'll be home.

I think the concept of "my house my rules" has value even with a young adult. As a wise parent you will chose some more lenient rules as they mature. But it is always wise, no matter how old we are, to remember that whoever holds the purse strings holds the power.. be that your parent, spouse, or boss.
If you are dependent on someone else to provide your basic necessities you will end up having to live by their rules or move on.
Not all kids are willing to accept even lenient rules of "common courtesy" and they may need a parent to bring the hammer down. Parents shouldn't feel they are trapped waiting at home for a family member to come home either.
