We went back to husband's parents home, and I liberated (stoled)a few recipes . His mother passed away a couple of years ago. One recipe is for rhubarb bars. Her famous rhubarb bars. She never gave out the recipe EVER! Well now, the written recipe is NOT complete! No way does even doubling the recipe fill the pan that they are made in. And the sugar. Three cups of brown sugar? ( not doubled). Even from beyond the grave she isn't going to give out that recipe! Update: Husband said they were good. The topping was thicker on his mom's. He liked it but the rest if the brothers would not. I will post a recipe

I hope you solve it. I'd love to make these if not too sweet, not too tart It's funny how wilt some are about their recipes- wonder how they'd like the online sharing that happens today? Or maybe that explains some of the funky notes that I always thought were typos?

Maybe there's another copy somewhere. She could have used it for a guide and had it all in her head.

My Nana would purposely leave out an ingredient so we never knew what her exact recipes were! Maybe you can find a close matched recipe and figure the correct ingredients from there?

the recipes I got from my Nana were all missing something - most of the time it was the oven temp and how long - the instruction was bake til done

Is anyone else thinking of the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond" when Marie deliberately sabotaged Deb in making hr recipe for her famous meatball (I think it was)? Too funny.
You would think you would want your family to enjoy their favorites from you once you were gone.

the whole idea of not giving out a recipe or purposely writing it down wrong...well it just doesn't make much sense to me
if we cook to nourish and love one another why on earth would someone be so stingy about it? gina

for women of my grandmother's generation, they were most often homemakers. Their reputations rested on how well they did that job. Part of that was cooking. Being able to do something well and have a dish that was requested was a source of pride. It made them feel loved, admired, and useful. If they gave out that recipe so anyone could make it, then it wasn't theirs anymore.
Also I think that recipe books were not nearly as common as they are now. We live in a world where we can get a recipe for anything from anywhere. Sharing recipes is the standard. They lived in a world where recipes were part of their inheritance from their mothers and grandmothers. They were probably tweaked and adjusted from generation to generation, each woman working with the recipes until she was happy with them. So time, effort, food, and family pride were wrapped up in those as well.
My grandmother wasn't a great cook. She was pretty average for her time, but she had one dish that everyone loved. You had better believe that no one has that recipe. It was hers. She told my mom that if she shared, what use would her family have for her? I think that's a common worry.

My beloved dh and his mother whom I love dearly never write a recipe correctly. There is always something missing that they just assume you should know. Last night I changed my dinner plan at the last minute, because I was going to use one of their recipes and I'M NOT A MIND READER. Drives me nuts. If you change a recipe please write down the changes for others who will read it later. First world problem!
