I would email the principal and the teacher. In our district, teachers *can* request specific subs but for the most part the positions are filled by a sub caller who works for the district. Of course dealing with issues directly is preferable but many times I don't get the refupeas "omg DON'T alert the principal!!" I feel like it's their job to know about general issues such as this.
I don't think anyone here is saying OMG, don't call the principal. It's just that different districts have different protocols for subs. It's a matter of who is the most appropriate for the task.
However, there most certainly is a protocol when dealing with teacher issues in general. It's just bad form to jump straight to calling the principal without first talking to the teacher.
Imagine if I called Social Services to open a case every time a student said "my mom is going to kill me if I get an F." Do I jump to reporting the parents or do I feel out the situation first, knowing that kids are prone to exaggeration, if not flat out lies? That's all teachers want, the same assumption that we're doing the best we can with what we're given. Talk to us first before you run to our bosses.

I was speaking in general terms of discussions similar to this over many years here and at 2Ps. I realize different districts have different protocols which is why I worded my answer "in my district..."
Sometimes, yes it is appropriate to deal directly with the teacher. Sometimes it is not. That is where my comment was directed. There *are* times when the principal should be included from the get-go and *I* don't think it's a cardinal sin to do just that. **In my district** the regular classroom teacher in this situation would have little power to do anything about this particular situation. She could and, in my opinion, should request to not have that sub again. But the principal is the one would could and, in my opinion, should deal with the actual issue with the sub therefore should be involved from the beginning.

There are definitely some subs out there that shouldn't be allowed in the classroom. I think some people think it is a quick way to make some money. I would email the teacher and cc the principal.
We had a sub a few times in high school that was passing out his business cards for his tanning booth business. Then about a year later he was in the news because he was secretly photographing girls while they were tanning at his business. Talk about a predator.
My son had a sub last year that was a yeller and also didn't let the kids use the bathroom if needed (which is the usual rule at our school). So I just emailed the teacher and cc'd the principal. I don't think this was the first complaint this sub had received.
So, subs aren't supposed to print out coloring pages for the kids because the sub doesn't know how to sing (choir class, for 3 days!)?
Not sure what this has to do with telling kids that they are all dead souls?? I think a teacher would probably have less trouble with coloring pages than with hearing their kids learned all about being dead. (of course that begs the question of why a sub would even take a job for a choir class if they don't know music and/or how to sing...)
My sarchasm wasn't working, I think. I was referring to her saying a sub should teach to the standards....

If any teacher, sub or regular, had told my kid that bunch of crap when she was in second grade, that teacher would have had to deal with me up close, in her face and personal. I was always kind of a free range parent. I let my daughter deal with things herself, with my coaching. In this instance I'd have been right on top of this with the idiot who uttered those words. What the hell is wrong with people?
At first I was thinking this was high school students and my eyes were popping. Then when you said 2nd graders I about fell out of my chair. SOOOO not ok. I'm very glad to hear that the school was on it right away & took care of the problem. My goodness.

I guess I was one of those parents. I always consider a copy a safety net for both me and the teacher/school personnel involved, not a tattling, especially if it an issue out of the ordinary and the normal teacher is away. I think those in a supervisory position should be aware of situations under their umbrella and I see it as an opportunity for a teacher to be commended for going beyond the call of duty. Guess I'm a glass half full sort of person and don't feel like the whole world is against me.
