Just found out today. Louis(my avatar) is 11 1/2. Anyone have experience with this? I know it's going to cost me a fortune.

My 15 year old cocker has had them for years...but we haven't done anything about it and she seems to be able to see things fine.

Every dog I've had has gotten old enough to get cataracts. We've never done anything about them, they've managed just fine.

Our golden, Pepper, who will be 12 in November has a cataract in his right eye. Our vet does not recommend us doing anything because we get her to check it every time. Pepper see what he wants to see and "herds" us around all the time. It is expensive because one of my friends checked on it a couple of years ago for her fur baby and it was around $3500. But my friend's vet never suggested anything be done either.

vet just told me yesterday not to let my dog drive anymore. He is 12 us had cataracts for several years. He still sees things moving in the yard and barks at them and doesn't seem to have any problem getting around the house. Sometimes he barks at me and then seems embarrassed when he realizes it is me

Every senior dog I've had has developed cataracts. They adjust, I even had a dog go blind, I had no idea she navigated her house and yard so well. It's hard to see them get old.

Our last Boston had cataracts, didn't bother him one bit. By the time he passed he was completely blind and deaf. The only time he ever ran into anything was right after a seizure. The scariest thing was that he ran like a wild dog back into the house after he went to the bathroom, up until the end...his route took him thru the back patio, around a grill, cement table, lamp post, and landscaping...never did he ruin into anything.

Wow- that makes me feel better. Louis' eyesight is still good. He was about to tear the sliding glass door down yesterday- he was barking at a squirrel in a planter on the deck. Took me awhile to figure out what was going on- he sees better than I do! I just don't want him to go blind- I know he's getting older and it just kills me.

We have an 11yo Lhasa and he has gone blind from them over the past four years. He does not jump on the bed anymore but will jump down. Hubby made a section off the back porch for him and our other pup to go out in and he walks out gets to the steps and whoever takes him out says the steps for him, big step, big step, big step, little step and he is on the grass. He does his thing and comes back up just fine. Bed time he will stand in the living room and bark until one of us goes in, stands behind him and says gogogo. Then he gets off the rug walks three steps to the hallway and straight to the bedroom. He can sure find his food with no problems though.
