DD needs to do a presentation for her Social Studies class on a famous place. Her teacher asked that they use technology to do this but asked that they don't use Power Point. What are some other programs she can use?

What are some other programs she can use? What has the teacher talked to them about using? Instead of don't use this what examples of ideas have been given? I've had to put together presentations using imovie and Final Cut then upload to youtube and do a closed caption on them.

I don't know if she has recommended anything. This was just a brief conversation with dd this morning. I'll look at Prezi. Thanks.

How old is your DD? I do not mean this snarky, but shouldn't she have an idea what to use?
PowerPoint is passé at our elementary too, but the kids know what is on school computers and their own devices. Are you asking so you can keep up with her?

She is in 6th. She said this morning she didn't know what else to use besides power point. I told her I'd look into it.

My kids have been using prezi or iMovie for years. Much more creative than power point.

On site support for her is going to be easier than what RefuPeas offer if the school isnt giving it. Also check your local library. We always forget, but the librarians here are trained in this sort of thing and help the kids using their computers.

You might want to clarify whether or not he wanted them to use multi media at all in the presentation. When he said "no Power Point" was he saying no to all forms of video/slide/projection aides? He may be asking them to go old school with photos and poster board. I know it's rare these days for that be expected, but it might be a good idea to clarify the point before she puts work into something else.

My youngest (9th) had a poster board last week. They average one assignment per year on paper. TPTB say it's to allow the traditional visual art types to use their strengths as well. Unfortunately those are not my children... I didn't realize until too late my HGap kid didn't know he should draw light guidelines on the map to help keep his lettering straight. Sigh... skills lost to technology . We won't talk about the coloring....

My dd uses key note, but it 'feels' the same as power point. They use key note at their school. My dd chooses a poster board whenever she can - I think that it gets boring for the kids to sit through key note after key note. It's usually just words on the screen and the kids read aloud off of it. (That is what they've been at her school / grade level - maybe they'll improve now that she's older. I wish they had lessons on key note presentations). Although if your dd is doing it on a place I imagine there are a lot of cool maps / pictures that could be included in either a poster or a key note.

When my dd makes a poster, she prints out the headings, content and pictures and the creative elements comes in the design. She treats it like I used to treat a scrapbook page, with matching colors, matting, embellishments, etc. and she thinks of creative ways to highlight her content, but she doesn't have to do lettering, etc.

Prezi is so fun - I love when a professional comes in to do a presentation and they use Prezi. Makes me feel they think outside the box instead of using the same ol Power Point slideshow.

paigepea true, but that negates the point the school is trying to emphasize. And that's okay, my son learned something he needs to know.

WAIT.....I haven't read all of the responses, but what software does the teacher have available to her? If your dd is giving this at school via the teacher's laptop, then it MUST be what she, the teacher has available.
If it is a free program, then the teacher has to know what it is and contact their tech dept. to load it onto her computer. That's assuming that tech will allow her to have it on her computer.
So, I'd go back to the teacher and see what she has on her computer and start there.

From you initial question, I assumed the teacher didn't want a series of slides. My first thought, since the topic is a historical place, was that she should use Google Maps to get a photo image of the area.

My DD uses Prezi a lot unless she has to use PP. She's in 9th grade.

If they are an iPad classroom, I would use KeyNote. I often use Prezi because I get tired of the same old power point at work.

Do the kids have devices (or are there devices available for them)? Even if there are only a few devices (laptops, iPads, smartphones), the kids in the class can sit in teams. If so, have her use Quizziz or Kahoot (both web based) to make a trivia game! They can play the quiz first and then as they answer questions she can talk about the correct answers. Kahoot - Like bar trivia. Points for answers, more points for the sooner you answer correctly QuizizzPrezi is another option, but it's very "one person directed." Having the kids in the class play a game will get everyone involved in her presentation.

It's pretty rare that you'd have to "load" anything onto computers anymore, with the exception of Office/Keynote. Between all the cool websites out there and tools like Google Apps for Edu, software that actually lives on the computer is becoming more and more rare.

Another web based tool is Thinglink. You can use a background image with "hotspots" that you create that can link to information that she enters (text), websites, twitter feeds, images, videos from YouTube, and more. She could demo the Thinglink and present the info. She can also give the link to the teacher, who could post it for students (on a class blog, website, learning management system like Edmodo, etc.) www.thinglink.com

I realize that a lot is online, but tech may have an issue. Seriously, this happens in our school all of the time. The teacher isn't familiar with it and it won't work.
Just please let your teacher know what your daughter wants to use.
