I'm having a hard time figuring out what my phone is using cellular data for. I'm racking up charges every month for data usage -- but I'm not actively using my phone.
Details: -Cellular data is turned off for all apps - I have WIFI at home and my phone connects to that - I'm seeing 50-80 mb of data NIGHTLY, around midnight-1 am, sometimes at 2 or 4 or 5 am. WHAT IS MY PHONE DOING? How can I turn this off? I'm asleep during these periods so I KNOW my phone isn't being actively used. When I first started seeing these charges/data usage I started checking to make sure my phone is connected to wifi at night (thought maybe the bedroom wasn't getting wifi from the router) and it definitely is always connected.

Your phone is probably backing up to the cloud. I have NO idea why it isn't using wifi though.

Just out of curiosity - what phone do you have? I upgraded to an I-phone 6 a few months ago and my data usage is through the roof compared not my data usage with my I-phone 5. I checked my bill detail and I am also using a lot of data at times I am not using the phone. I locked down a number of apps last night and limited there data usage to only when I am connected to wi-fi. Hopefully what I did will reduce my usage enough that I don't go over my data plan. Sorry I don't have any advice. I am hoping someone will most some tips that I can also use.

Make sure your brightness is turned down and all your apps are off.

Make sure your brightness is turned down and all your apps are off. Brightness would affect battery life. Would not have an impact on data usage.

I feel like I have apps turned off... but then there are different places they keep popping up -- like, why would I be backing up my dictionary app to iCloud? I love words, but not that much.

I have been turning my data off all together. I have limited data and turn it on to download pictures that friends/family text or occasional web surfing when I am out. Im on a Samsung...if that makes a difference.

I believe when the phone goes to sleep, the wifi connection is lost - so any background refresh of apps, checking emails etc is using mobile data. Can you just switch off the phone at night? If you're using it as an alarm, maybe use airplane mode?
