I'm looking at getting some packing cubes so that I only have to use a carry on size bag for an upcoming trip. Can anyone recommend a specific brand or give a heads up on ones to avoid? Thanks!

I love the packing cubes from ebags (they make their own brand). They are inexpensive, too.

I got mine from The Container Store. They weren't cubes but did the same thing.

eBags cubes purchased from Amazon which I think was cheaper than the eBags website.
DH and I have two sets each of the 3 pc sets (S, M & L) and two of the shoe bags.

I have Eagle Creek that I bought from the Container Store and I love them. Very good quality, perfect sizes. Stuff fits great. I also have a set that I bought at Target and they are oddly sized, too flat, and the edges are really stiff so they don't squish into place as well.
I've looked at the ebags version and would probably get them. I'm just more likely to buy things in person. I've seen good sales on them on Amazon.

We have the Eagle Creek compression cubes. Those things are amazing. I can roll 8 of DH's T-shirts into a bag about an inch thick and smaller than a standard piece of paper. We also have the clothes folder. You fold your clothes with a folding board like Sheldon Cooper uses and stack them into a big nylon envelope. They stay surprisingly less wrinkled than you would think. So the compression cubes for t-shirts and unders and the folder for nice shirts and pants.
We LOVE our packing products. We went on a 10 day vacation, each with a small rolling carry on and we really could have made it with one carry on if we hadn't of had jackets and extra shoes.

(Until I looked it up I thought you were talking about the U-Pak things people have outside their houses before they move. We would call those a packing cube. There is a bright yellow one not too far from where I live!)

I know there are other companies that do the same thing but they are all generically called Pods, or maybe temporary storage units. Nope, looking for packing advice for vacation travel, not moving, thank goodness! Just did that about a year ago!

I must admit I've never looked into these things but we are planning a 2.5 week trip to Thailand in 8 weeks and I am already panicking about the size of suitcase I will take!

Yup. Eagle creek cubes and packing folders are fabulous. I just went on an 11 day trip with nothing but my carry-on.

I will say that the 8-tshirts in one cube was just a test of the cubes when I got them. There is no length of trip where DH would take 8 t-shirts. You might want to go to you tube and pull up the Eagle Creek videos, in particular the compression cubes (they have other cubes that are not compression, but still very handy). Also, honestly, DH and I have seriously changed our packing strategy. Our longest vacations are 2.5 weeks and we ONLY ever carry the carry-on size suitcase and a small backpack each. We might check them on the way home if we've brought back alcohol, but the freedom to move around without lugging a lot of luggage makes all the difference in the world. For DH, he'll take 3 t-shirts, 3 collared shirts, 3 unders, 3 pairs of socks, and 3 pairs of pants (it would be 2 pair of pants but DH is 6'6 and can't buy them off the rack). Everything he owns will dry over night. So I will wash things out in the sink and hang them in the shower and they are dry the next day. Some people refuse to do that on vacation, but it is so worth it to us. And of course, sometimes we're staying somewhere that has access to laundry so we'll do it there. And my stuff is pretty much the same, with the exception of a nice dress. We were on the same train from Paris to Normandy once with some other Americans and they had the largest suitcases I've ever seen plus a large carry-on, having to walk from the train down the stairs, under the track and back up the other side, then onto their hotel. They were exhausted. That just re-affirmed our belief that lighter is the way to go. Go to the fodors forums and the Rick Steves forums. You'll find a lot of packing lists and advice. And have a great trip! ETA: Somehow my cat walking across the screen deleted the quote and I can't get it back. Sorry from Dasher!

melodyesch thanks for all the tips. I have gotten much better over the years but still need some work LOL. Generally we don't tend to move around a lot when we vacation so cases arent a big hassle. If I was moving from ace to place U would definitely only do carry on. My problem is that I like to have lots of choices of clothes

I don't understand how they save you space? I get that everything is organized, which I love.

I love packing cubes! For about 2 years DH and I have only flown using carry-ons. It is totally doable if you are smart with your packing. I am a girly girl and use lots of hair, skin, makeup products. My biggest fear/challenge was getting it all into a quart size bag. Well what I've done is condense my travel bottles down even smaller. Who needs a 3oz size of hair gel for a week long trip? I also use makeup wipes vs. my regular makeup remover since the wipes don't count as a liquid. Take a powder foundation for the same reason. I've been so excited at meeting the challenge. It's so much nicer to travel without lugging around a big suitcase.

Ikea do a pack of 3 or 4 which is roughly the same price as one eagle creek cube- and they are just as good in my opinion . I have navy for my boys and pink for my DD and myself.

I'm pretty cheap for some things so I have just been using big ziploc bags (the ones that fit 12x12 scrapbook paper) for my unders, socks an bras. I love how organized the baggies make packing. My shirts and shorts wouldn't fit in those so I think you all have convinced to get some e-bag type bags.
Dang enablers.

When you put your clothes into a cube, it's a specific space. They are packed more tightly. This makes them move less, which als helps with wrinkles. (I like shirt folders for dressier things) The cubes are friction free and can be packed more tightly in a suitcase. Your suitcase becomes more organized.
My DH was skeptical about cubes, but swears by them now. It just seems like you have much less wasted space.

I have a set for each of us that includes a quarter cube, a half cube, and a full cube (think shirts). Tha half cube can be used for shoes; for a longer trip I use it for undies, pjs, etc. good luck, and have fun!
