I have two dd (20 & 23). Neither one has a 'photo album' in the traditional sense. They print their photos for a reason. By the time I was their age I had 2 full albums and never dreamed of 'not' having albums. That was then...
This is now…because of the technology with the smartphones & digital photos, I save everything to our computers, clouds & usb. When I want a picture printed, I either send it out or print at home. I do not print photos out from my digital camera to "keep" in photo albums like the good old days. If I print a photo, it is for a reason too.
All of the family photos have been scanned and everybody in the family has a copy. Would it still be taboo to start using the 'original' photos in your scrapbooks? I haven't decided what I will do yet. I keep weighing of the pros and cons. I am caught between generations! I want to keep the integrity of the original photo without having to reprint it because it seems like a waste to have the same photo in two different albums. What say ye?

I have used originals but always scan a copy for just in case. I like the looks of some of the photos of my childhood in late 50's early 60's!

I try not to but I have and will. I like having copies of them especially if its a pic I really like.

I actually made the mistake of cutting original photos into shapes like stars and circles when I first started scrapping...sigh. Since then, I have used originals, but I did not alter them otherwise. Many newer ones are digitally saved.

I've always agreed with Shimelle's way of thinking. Scan/photograph the original so you have a digi file, then scrap the original. What are you really going to do with it? Put it in a box? Is it any safer there than in an album? You've got the scan/high-res photo, you can make copies if your books get damaged, I say go for it. Both the original and an album are in your house if a natural disaster happen, so it's not like you're preserving the photos by not scrapping them. Do it! Be dangerous and scrap the originals!

I've scrapped original photos because they were the only one photos I had. I used photo corners or placed the photos in pockets so they weren't permanently attached. Sometimes, the photos had handwriting on the back that I didn't want to lose, in addition to the photo itself.

If its an old photo I always scan it. I personally would never use an original. And. By old I mean before digital camera. As far as current photos, I always print out what I need and have a digital copy as a back up.

I use original photos in my books unless my design idea is going to permanently alter the photo. In that case I'll have a print made.
I don't scan ALL of my pre-digital photos because so many are people who were important to me but aren't historically important to family history. I may scan the one good shot in a birthday party that clearly shows the birthday child's face but I"m not going to scan the other 25 of his friends playing party games. Three generations from now may be interested in a good photo of grandpa at six but they aren't going to be as interested in keeping all the shots of grandpa's six year old friends eating cake.

I use the original (scan before using for a digital file of it) but depending on the how old they are, I use photo corners to secure them on the page so that I can take them out if needed. The ones I used most are from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, they have many colors to choose from (white, kraft, pink, black, silver and gold).

I use original. I don't plan on scrapping it more than once and I doubt I'll need more copies.

For all my current photos that are digital files anyway, I print and use the original. The question really comes into play for non-digital photos. For the most part I am a scan them and use original's type. However, there are exceptions, I do have some family heirloom (mainly photos of my dad) that if I used I would only use with photo corners so they could be taken out, but the one that I have scrapped was just the digital copy. The original is in a frame.

I say hold onto the original and scrap a copy. You may look back years from now and not like what you've done with it, but it won't be that big of a deal if it's just a copy. I know it's just my issue, but I'm a big time "what if"-er, so it would freak me out to cut or tape down originals. Just to be clear, I consider "originals" anything pre-digital camera age

I use original photos...if they are heritage I tend to use photo corners, so they can be easily removed later if someone wants a copy. I don't put embellishments or titles over the top of the photos.

You mean "one of a kind" photos?
I tend to scrap them differently...without perm adhesive.

I scrap everything. If it's an old photo, I use clear photo corners so it's not permanently adhered to the page.

I always keep originals in a regular photo album. I only scrap copies, except for those theme park photos that they take on the rides. I don't feel like I need a second copy of those. I buy them specifically for scrapping.

I scrap originals, I do scan though. I feel its better to use originals, at least they are somewhere safe.

Now that everything is digital I scrap the original. For my pre-digital photos I'm lucky because I always printed out doubles so I could scrap one and keep the other just in case. So I guess no if it's before digital I couldn't scrap an original Id have to scan it and use a copy.

I scrap the originals too. But everyone is scanned in and saved unless I have a duplicate, like all my digital photos.
I do scrap copies on occasion if I don't own the original or I want to edit or resize the photo. I have many of my moms childhood photos that are only 2x3 or smaller. And I only want to use one on a LO to tell the story.
It all depends on the photo and the story. But I try to use the original when I can. Better in an album than a shoe box.

I always scrap with original photos! I guess if they are really special photos, I might make copies. Now all my photos are backed up so I don't think about it.

I would normally scrap the original but scan a copy. To me, the album is the safest place for it. Otherwise I have to find somewhere to store it.

Thanks everybody! I've gotten some good ideas as I read through how you do it (or don't do it! ). I will use the originals but won't adhere them down permanently. The photos I'm really questioning are the one of a kind, never to be replaced again.
You might be surprised! I must admit that I am that person who immerses themselves in old photos. I have spent countless hours pouring over old family photos. I would love to see grandpa's other six friends and all about his party -cake, presents, friends and all! Now just imagine three generations from now looking at a Sponge Bob birthday party and the Lincoln Logs as a present to a then six year old grandpa! They will instantly know about Lincoln Logs but will question 'what's a sponge bob?'.
It is amazing to me about how they lived when you can see the background: furniture, how they dressed, hair styles, cars, etc. Don't take me to an antique store where there is a bucket of photos, we may never leave and they have nothing to do with my family history!!
