My daughter (age 5) will be having a birthday party in a few weeks. I've been thinking of putting together goody bags but am hoping to maybe do something else instead. Lately, I've dreaded getting goody bags because it just seems like what we get in them is just more things to clutter up the house. I also have a few children attending her party with different food allergies (peanuts, eggs, etc.) so I don't want to include candy that could make them sick or they can't eat. Have you ever given out something besides goody bags at a party? At recent parties we went to, my daughter got a small pumpkin and supplies to decorate it and at another, she got a small stuffed dog (the theme of the party was dogs). We have both boys and girls attending. I'd love to hear any ideas!

What is the theme of your party?
I did this often. Tiaras, stuffed puppies, light sabers, etc. I usually geared it to the theme of the party or a game the kids played.

My son's birthday is on Halloween. One year, the kids decorated (and taking them home was the goody bag) two caramel apples each. I dipped them and I had bowls of everything you could possibly think of to decorate one of those things with - gummy bears, marshmallows, nuts (although you wouldn't want to have those, choc chips, sprinkles, raisins, etc. etc. etc. They had a blast and when they were done, we let them sit out for the rest of the party, then I wrapped them in wax paper for the kids to take home.
Another year, we did a pinata. Everything they collected from it was their take home.

Those large bouncy balls (this was a huge hit at a party) or coloring books and crayons.

The last couple parties DS has gone to, he's come home with a box of new crayons and coloring books. Another handed out a painting book (Hero 6 or Frozen) with attached paint pots. I think I saw them in the Target dollar spot. In the spring, he came home with some sidewalk chalk and bubbles.

I gave out thank you cards with 5$ gift cards to McDonalds. I had my son address the cards before the party. He wrote the guests name on the outside of the envelope and "thank you from Steve" inside the card.
Killed two birds there, managed to give out thank you cards and not a cheap junky goody bag.

$5.00 gc for DQ, Baskin Robbins, Menchies. Maybe a little more expensive than $ store junk but well worth it IMO.

Thank you for not saying they are filled with crap I get that it isn't what some people want, but someone did put time and effort into filling them so it always feels so dismissive when people call it crap! We have done the caramel apples at 4-H, the kids loved it! I have two smaller crockpots and had teh caramel in them so the kids could cover their own apples and then move on to decorating. I love some of the other ideas and look forward to hearing more. We reward our 4-H kids a lot throughout the year, but we don't have a large budget. A lot of it is donated by the parents. And with 28 kids in our club it really starts adding up. So sometimes those small things that kids love but parents hate are quick, easy and cheap to do

I'll second the bouncy ball or something fun for kids like those long flute-style whistles. I always preferred the one larger cheap toy over a bag of really cheap toys or, worse, a bag of candy. Ali did get a bag of large gumballs one year - that was really cute, though I still would prefer less junk food.

A friend whose child's birthday was in the summer, picked up and gave out sand buckets with molds and shovels on a sale for about $1 each, one year.

DD had a spa themed party, so I did spa gift bags. I got nail files at party city, poufs, nail polish and toe separators from Ulta on black Friday for a buck each. I felt like we were able to give a nice bag without breaking the bank.
McDonalds is doing trick or treat booklets right now, that might be fun.

We gave out medium sized light up balls from the dollar store for my daughter's 5th and whatever candy they grabbed from the pinata. They also made bracelets that they took home. Other birthdays it was either crayons/coloring books, water squirters (when we had a water party), bubbles. Or whatever craft they did was their favor. For her second birthday (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) I cut Mickey Heads out of freezer paper and ironed them onto 8x10 canvases to make a stencil. The kids just scribbled with crayons and they had Mickey head art when I peeled them off. Those were a big hit. I'm with you on one large thing over a bag of little stuff. I know people put a lot of effort into goody bags but most of the time the contents didn't even make it through the car ride home. She would pull everything out on the way home, break or use up half of it and it would go right into the garbage as soon as we got home.

We have given $5 gift cards to a local toy store and a coloring book from the museum where the party was held. For a princess and pirate party, we had tutus and garland halos/crowns for the girls and pirate medallion necklaces and eyepatches for the boys. We have gotten superhero capes, personalized tote bags, cheerleader pompoms.

We did gift cards to our local ice cream parlor - they sold one cone cards which were a great price point
another time we burned cds with the music we played at the party
one more I remember, we did baseball caps

I would go to Target or Walmart and look at their seasonal toys. Perhaps a snowball maker, goggles, or cheap frisbee?

My son's 6th birthday party was a Nerf War party. Kids each got a dog tag necklace,a pair of safety glasses, a pair of camo under eye tattoos and a tshirt that we customized. The kids chose what color glasses, tattoos and dog tags they wanted. The shirts were all the same.

Glow sticks and bubbles - kids love these at any age and they can both be picked up at the dollar store.
Inexpensive canvas bags from Michaels (IIRC 3/$12 without a coupon) - decorate them for Halloween.

I went to Ulta today and bought travel size shower gel/bubble bath to give out for DD's party favors. They had really yummy scents. I think we will wrap them in Halloween fabric and tie with raffia.

My age is showing! When my daughter was little we went to the party, had a good time, gave a gift and went home. The birthday child was happy and so were the other children. It seems like having a child's party is a big investment now with all the entertainment plus a gift for each child. I'm not being critical. I just didn't realize children had to receive a gift for giving a gift.

I'm a big fan of non-candy favors. What age and theme are we working with ajsweetpea? My daughter is 5. Kids attending are ages 4-5. The party is on a farm so a farm theme would be good or even anything fall/Halloween related would be cute too!

Is there a pumpkin patch at the farm? Can each kid pick out their own pumpkin to take home as the party favor? I also really like the idea of a straw cowboy hat and bandana. That would be fun for the kids!

For DD's princess/pirate party last spring, the girls each got a tutu in her favorite color that I made plus a crown and a bubble wand from the dollar store and a princess necklace that I made. The boys got a pirate hat and eye patch from Target, a bandana from Hobby Lobby and a bubble wand from the dollar store. We hosted at our house, so I spent about what I would have on each kid if we would have gone to a jump zone place or bowling. Then at the last minute, DH decided to rent a bouncy castle too, and then complained that I did "too many special things" ugh. We also decorated our deck with blown up punch balls that we gave the kids to take home.

Love the idea for hat and bandana! You can get the hats cheap from Oriental Trading.
Pumpkin and/or supplies to decorate it small stuffed farm animal plastic animals, bigger ones like a single Schleich or a bag of smaller ones from the dollar store matchbox size tractor bucket-I feel like they always have buckets in the dollar spot and my kids LOVED something to put things in one of those kits to grow a flower/vegetable

I like the idea someone had about a small pumpkin. One year we had ds1 party at the botanical garden and they could pot plants to take home. They could also decorate their pot or a rock. I gave out hats and sunscreen sticks and some goldfish and cookies.
