I got a new hair colorist this year. She's done my hair 3 times now. The first two times were perfect, my hair is a golden blonde. On Friday when I went to her she asked what I wanted and I said the same as last time. I leave with wet hair and the lighting there isn't so great so it wasn't until I got home and started blowdrying my hair that I discovered that my hair was grey! and the roots peach/orange because she didn't leave the bleach on long enough to lift my color.
I called the salon Saturday morning and said I had to come back in immediately to have it fixed. She put a rinse in it and it came out the same. I told her she needed to cover the roots up with a light brown rinse to cover the orange which will be seen when I part my hair. And the rest of my hair my usual golden tone. I asked her if she had my formula written down and she said she did but that she tweaks it every time based on how my hair looked. Which didn't make any sense to me since she's just doing my roots.
So she put the rinse in my hair again and this time I ended up with a Taylor Swift blonde. I hate it! I showed her a picture of me from last week and said this is not the same color, she looked me in the eye and said it is the same color. At this point I felt like everyone was watching our interaction and I didn't want to make a scene so I went to another salon who washed it multiple times with DAWN, clarifying shampoo and it still hasn't changed. I thought toners were supposed to rinse out?
So my question for you is, what should I do now? Do I go back to the salon and have her bleach my hair again which could damage it? Do I trust her since she's now color blind? It will be really awkward with all the employees there watching me as the difficult customer. I swear I was polite and she was very nice about the whole thing.
With tip I paid $155.

Yikes! If you really can't bear it, she (or someone else at the salon) needs to fix it. It's possible that they may not be able to get it back to the previous colour, without stripping your hair.

For the cost of $155.00, why isn't the hair dried and styled? That should be included in the price.
Talk to the owner of the salon.

The original salon needs to put it right.....or admit they can't.

Since you paid the colorist for services, she is responsible for providing your desired color. Speak to a manager & arrange an appointment with another colorist to explore your corrective options at their expense. (Be prepared for the manager to dismiss responsibility because you chose to involve another salon, & s/he is unaware of the products/processes used there.) If they are unable or refuse to correct the color, request a refund. Next time expect satisfaction from the salon that took your money before going elsewhere! Best wishes...

Why would you leave with wet hair? Was that by choice? Part of me would want to go back and insist they fix my hair and the other part of me wouldn't trust her at all. I would hate to be in your position. I can usually say that it is just hair and it will grow out, as we all have had bad experiences, and I have been going to the same person who uses the same formula each time but sometimes it just takes differently but yours seems more severe and it may take a long time to grow out, so needs immediate attention.

Ugh, I think I would cut my losses at this point & find someone else & also request a refund. I'm dealing with a bad haircut right now but your color problem sounds worse. Good luck!

Salons in my city charge extra for a blowdry - $60 after a color. They only have one black hairstylist and when she dried my hair she did a terrible job so now I make an apt the next day at another salon to dry it. I see a few women blowdrying their own hair after color.

That is a LOT of money for very little service. Why does it matter that they only have one black hairstylist? Certainly the colour of a person's skin does not matter when blowdrying hair?
I would really appreciate knowing where you live, approximate area. Thanks!

I don't think I'd be leaving the salon unless my hair was blow dried so I could see the actual color or cut. I think I might be looking for a new colorist at this point. Sorry that happened to you!

Why don't you post a picture so we can see what you are talking about. The peas will give you honest answers.
I would be leery to bleach it again because you might get breakage.
Is this so bad that you want to wear a hat? Are you friends asking you what you did to you hair??

I color my hair at home.
It costs $7. I'm 100% happy with the color all the time.
I don't have to tip and I don't have to go anywhere with wet hair.
I would never go to (and have never heard of) a salon that makes you leave with wet hair. For reasons like this - I want to check the work before I pay.

My stylist does not dry my hair after a color. She will only blow dry after a cut. She does encourage me to dry it some myself, and on occasion if she has time, she'll dry it a little bit, but not style.

That is crazy that you pay extra to have it blow dried after a color. Most colorists I know want to make sure there isn't a problem with the color, or if they have to tone it. My bff is a colorist, and works at a chi-chi place, but a blow dry is included with a color, not a hair cut, but a color.
You should speak with a manager/owner and have someone else fix it at the salon.

Annabella you need to make this right for yourself. You aren't the difficult customer she is the painfully unaware how to do hair beit white, black or propel people's hair. Call the owner of the salon tell him or her what happened. The owner at the salon I go to would not tolerate this. My hairdresser has been doing hair for 40 years and will fix anything if it were to go wrong. I got my hair done yesterday and it turned out perfectly. I don't live in Vancouver or Toronto or anything but she still charged me quite a lot of money and I left very happy. She is also a relative of BIL and so if she screwed up I could tell him and he would let her know.
I love my hairdresser. I book my appointments 2 months ahead, I am on time and so is she. I won't go to anyone else. (She does bang trims in between cuts because she doesn't want me cutting my own hair).
My point is you need to get this fixed. This is NOT your problem.

Wow! For $155 Id sure be upset! That's very expensive for just bleach roots snd and color refresh, BUT, admittedly, I live no where near an urban center ( and I have different hair ) but still. I get color refresh, roots, cut & style for that.
I would not go to her again. She's too flippant about her screw up for being well paid. I *might* go to another Colorist at that salon if there were anyone I thought could trust. My salon owners would offer me a repeat of the service with that Colorist or another or my money back. Also I would not have to do the repeat service until I felt comfortable about hair damage. Somehow they should make it right. At the point your at I would ( with pictures ) speak to the salon owner and ask for what you want done. IF there's anyone there you trust as for a fix, if not then ask for your mobey back!

I would go to a reputable senior colorist & have it fixed.
Yes you will be out additional money but at this point, you don't want to damage your hair more.
I have my hair colored every 6 weeks. It never looks exactly the same. Sometimes I am in the sun and it is more blonde going in. That being said, she should have owned up to the problem & assisted in getting it fixed. She didn't & I wouldn't go back to her again.

It's not about the stylist's skin color, it's about whether or not the stylist really knows how to handle a black person's hair- texture, etc is very different than non-black hair. Much like they suggest that a person with curly hair go to a stylist who has curly hair. That stylist understands curly hair and everything that goes along with it better than a stylist that doesn't have to deal with curly hair every day. annabella- I have no advice, but you do have my sympathies! Hope you can get it fixed soon!

You probably don't have ethnic hair that you are trying to straighten and lighten as well. I do my own hair color too but I am a generic white chick going a shade lighter. Totally different.

If you can stand it, it doesn't sound like you lose anything by waiting a bit for your hair to stabilize/recover/strengthen. That also gives you a chance to research all the alternatives should the original salon be unable to make this right.
I feel your pain -- I've had my share of hair mistakes, bad colors, crappy cuts, perms that went wrong, and the grow-out is miserable. But it does grow out, so it's more reversible than other bad things that can land in your path on a daily basis.

Your hair should be dried after coloring to make sure it's correct. You're being ripped off, that's basic service.

The point is I don't, it's not what I'm used to or desired. You know I don't need validation that it looks ok, the thing is it's not what I want. Shoot when I walked into the salon with the grey hair a customer told me she loved my hair color. lol

I agree as well that color doesn't always come out the same each time. I get mine done every 5 weeks --- sometimes all over, but mostly a combo of roots touched up and one-or-more colors woven into the strands. No way is that going to look exactly the same. But overall the look is consistent and that's what I count on. You definitely did not get consistency.

Holy moly. I go to an expensive salon and they dry my hair for me! My salon does hair for people of all colors. For that price, they should be good in every shade of people's hair!!
Where do you live and please show us your hair. Maybe you just aren't used to it? I'm sorry. It's AWFUL. Hair is pretty important.

I'd take it up with the owner but there's no way I'd let that stylist do my hair again. I'd cut my losses and go to someone else at a different salon.

Well that sucks. Are you prepared to go to battle with her, or cut your losses and go somewhere else to get it fixed. I personally could not afford to lose $155 so I would most likely go back to the salon and insist that they fix it properly. For the cost of $155.00, why isn't the hair dried and styled? That should be included in the price.
Salons in my city charge extra for a blowdry - $60 after a color. They only have one black hairstylist and when she dried my hair she did a terrible job so now I make an apt the next day at another salon to dry it. I see a few women blowdrying their own hair after color. My hair costs me exactly $155 and that includes cut, colour and blow dry. I can understand you not wanting to pay an extra $60 for a blow dry - yikes!! It's funny, but my hair dresser refuses to let me walk out of the salon without blow drying my hair first. She wants to make sure that the cut and colour are both ok and she can't do that as well when my hair is wet. When DS was a baby she used to "let" me leave with wet hair because I had to get home to breast feed. But last month when I was there her senior stylist was off sick and she was really busy, and she still insisted on blow drying my hair even though I offered to not have it done. (For the record, it doesn't cost me any more for a blow dry - it is $110 for the colour and $45 for the cut/blow dry. It would still cost $155 even if I didn't get it blow dried. I know because I asked when I was trying to lower my costs.)

Seeing as how your stylist got it right 2 out of 3 times, I'd be inclined to give her a chance to fix it. If that fails and you get another unsatisfactory result, I'd request a full refund and not have her do your hair ever again. Take the refund and have it fixed somewhere else.
With that said, I never get a blow-dry when I get my hair done. One, I hate hair salons and want to get in and out as quick as possible. I do not find getting my hair done the indulgent, relaxing experience others do.
Second, I know that I will never, ever, EVER be able to recreate what they do, so I'd rather not even go there.

I would ask for a refund, even if just a partial one.
When I used to have my hair professionally colored, I would have a small index card with me and if I liked a particular color and highlights, I would tell the colorist to write down the formulas she used on the card. That way, when I returned and wanted the same thing I would just show the card and the colorist can duplicate the exact formula. This is especially helpful if you require a seamless blend of hues where lowlights and highlights are needed.
