I somehow must have missed that info, TFS. Certainly interesting, and since we usually choose a taxi when travelling to/from an airport, it wouldn't be a problem (unless the additional cost would be so high that we just as well could choose one of the bigger airports).

Thanks for sharing!
My dh is being courted by another team at his company that wants us to move to their office outside of Boston. One cool thing about living in Boston would be our close proximity to the large airports at Boston and New York for getting cheap flights to Europe.
We'd love to move to Massachusetts anyway. We love to do car trips and have wanted to explore New England and Eastern Canada. When we lived in Detroit, we drove to Toronto and enjoyed exploring the countryside.

Well I just noticed that Edinburgh is one of the destinations being touted, so I'll be happy to take advantage as long as the flights are also cheap when they originate from Europe!

Diane, dh's company office is located in Boxborough.
We're interested in the converted lofts in the area. There's a loft building that we want to move to here in Raleigh--if we don't wind up moving. Our lease is up in January, and the loft building is wheelchair friendly and has an elevator.
We adore old houses and would love to live in an old farmhouse, but we doubt that we'd find a place that was wheelchair accessible.
We have a friend that lives outside of Helsinki, Finland, and other friends in Spain. They love the cheap airfares and being able to travel with the awesome train system.
Dh's company has offices around the world. We'd love to move to Europe one day, but the office in Massachusetts specializes in what dh specializes in and have been begging to have him work for them full time for a while. Now there's an opening.
We might not even have to move to Massachusetts immediately because there's a lot of work that dh can do for that office while working at home. Dh hates having to travel for work, so if he was needed in their office regularly, we'd just move.

Well I just noticed that Edinburgh is one of the destinations being touted, so I'll be happy to take advantage as long as the flights are also cheap when they originate from Europe! The various cities being offered is one reason why I think this offer is so cool. Most trans-atlantic flights only go to a few major cities. I would love to fly to Edinburgh or Krakow. There's so many places in Europe I want to visit. Dh's family is from Belgium, and he's never been to Europe. If we only got to travel to Europe once, I want dh to see Paris and Brussels. We'd also love to explore the British Isles--I loved my short visit to England--when I learned that our flight to Paris had a layover in London, I insisted that we do a layover so I could see London and Stonehenge. I wanted to get to Scotland but didn't have time. My dad's family has Scottish roots, and I've always wanted to see Hadrian's Wall. Dh and I want to do the river cruise in Eastern Europe on the Rhine river. I've heard how beautiful Budapest, Warsaw, Krakow, and other German cities are.

There is a slight problem with this "offer".
First, they don't have the airplanes, yet, not until 2017, the airports that they are choosing in the USA do not have the proper international boarder persons, you will PAY for everything - a coffee, luggage, pillow, bringing a bag for overhead storage, and on and on and on.
I prefer to fly, especially over an ocean, with a carrier who has done these flights before, where there is some-what comfy seat and passengers are screened properly.
Spirit Airlines, anyone, but flying over the ocean, no thanks.

I'm skeptical. WOW airlines claim $99 flights from Canada to Iceland and $149 from Canada to Europe. Except...the cheapest flights are only available during non peak seasons. Only from Montreal, Toronto costs more. Does not include luggage and you have to pay for carry on luggage!!! The price was steep for luggage. You have to pay for luggage on EACH leg and the plane stops in Iceland. Fee from Toronto to Reykjavik then Reykajavik to London (Both ways). You have to pay for seat selection. I tallied up what it would cost for ds and I to fly to London Gatwick this summer and it was $1200 using WOW. Certainly not $149. Cheaper flights would be nice though

While cheap flights are nice for our wallets, they're less nice for the staff at these companies and also for the climate. You can fly Stockholm (Sweden) - Paris for approx 25 USD (but of course pay for your luggage, drinks etc) with a carrier that treats its staff poorly and I don't want to support that. I'm sure that's not the case for all companies, but how are they profiting from selling tickets for 25 USD if not by cutting staff costs, security costs etc?
And also, we have until now used more than our share of the climate resources and are now using those of our children and future grandchildren (my kids are teens).
So for me, cheaper air flight rates are not only a positive thing.

Spirit Airlines, anyone, but flying over the ocean, no thanks. I understand what you're saying but I disagree with you on the bolded part.....why would you think that passengers won't be screened properly or that an airline would need to have flown that route before? Airline safety and passenger screening is laid down by the International Aviation Authority. No, they probably don't have the planes yet that is why it's not coming into play until 2017. As for the coffee/pillows and overhead luggage etc, paying extra for these are quite common when you fly budget airlines. Not everyone on board wants these facilities so they would benefit from cheaper basic fares and they can add whatever extras they would use rather than having to pay their share so others will benefit However, I do agree that it isn't always cheaper to fly budget especially when you are working out your cost on a" headline" price. Very often there are only a certain amount of seats on sale for this base price and the nearer you get to the date of travel the more expensive the fare. The code on those headline prices if the "from"!!

I flew Norwegian Air from Florida to Stockholm about six months ago. It was around $300 one-way, mostly taxes but still much cheaper than the other airlines.
It happened to be their maiden trip from our airport to Stockholm and they had balloons, cupcakes and the pilot, etc at the gate to celebrate.
We flew on a Dreamliner and made it in around six hours!! Had great tailwinds!
Everything was great but remember it is a discount airline. I only traveled with a carry-on because I was also using discount airlines in Europe (Easyjet/Ryanair). I think because it was a long-haul that a regular piece of luggage was included but I'm not sure.
Also food was extra--like $40! I brought food onboard from the terminal, had a couple glasses of wine onboard, watched all sorts of stuff on the seatback TV and before I knew it we had landed.

@dottyscrapper, what I meant by proper screening, I was referring to the fact that there isn't a Homeland Security Office for International travel at these airports and these airports don't have all the most advanced screening devices that are required for international (eg. INTERPOL).
It is very different in North America airports than it is in European Union airports. Within the European Union, there is so much international travel as the countries are so close to one another. In North America, there are many airports, but actually few of them that are truly "international", meaning more than travel into Mexico, Canada & the USA.

Hmmm. I am skeptical. We flew Icelandair a few years ago. The flight was 3 hours late coming into Minneapolis which we were departing out of. That made us late into Reykjavik where we had to connect to our flight to Paris. Ended up in Paris several hours late. On the trip back, they didn't have seats for my 2 kids on the Iceland-Minneapolis leg. Had to fight with them at the counter to get them on the plane. At least with a major airline, you have a more of a chance if something goes wrong.

If it does happen they're not likely to let them fly into these regional airports without the proper procedures in place anyhow. Therefore these smaller airports will become" international" as far as security etc is concerned. If they already fly to places like Mexico and Canada from these airports then they're already " international". It doesn't make it any different because they're flying further afield across the Atlantic. I would guess that Norwegian Air are aware of what is needed, they already fly to a few US destinations be it to larger airports at the present time. They're a long established airline,1993 according to their website. So they're not a fly by night newly established budget airline.

Cheaper flights would be nice though DH recently flew non stop newark to London for arou d $1200 round trip so if it adds up to that then they are just itemizing everything for you as opposed to lump sum. Although if your not going on a specific day at the drop of a hat when your boss wants you to it can be under $1000
