I didn't see a thread; if I missed it, please let me know.
This show is SO over the friggin' top, I couldn't stand it. I made it an hour, and honestly can't believe I watched that much, and had to turn it off. I have no intention of watching it again. It was nothing like I was expecting or thinking.
What a disappointment, at least to me. I hate when shows are so shocking/brutal just for the sake of being shocking/brutal. But, I suppose that's what sells? So basically the show's about brutal sex/rapes and then they die. Do I have that right?
Anyone else watch and have thoughts?

I think as the show progresses it will be more about the back story of the characters and less about the shock factor. I really liked it. You have to remember the genre is horror. I was intrigued by the officer's connection to the hotel. Obviously we know the fate of his missing son. I am looking forward to the introduction of the rest of the cast.

I LOVED IT! You should give it another chance. The last 45 minutes were fantastic. Especially the last scene with the music. Perfection.

I was going to start a thread last night after I finished watching to but I just couldn't bring myself to write any words. @devildog summed up how I felt, though I did watch the entire show (regretfully) because my 20yo daughter was watching.
I had to turn away several times because the brutality was too much. The rape scene was disgusting anreven now I can't see how that contributed to the show. The only part that seemed ok to watch was portions with the detective. I was describing the show to my son late last night and said you know it is over the top when they have to have a warning after every commercial - made it easy to know when to restart at least.
I just don't think I can commit to watching this season with my daughter. My older son said they lost him a couple of seasons ago. There is nothing scary about this show, just over the top heavy in shock factor.

Well Freak Show was the first season I watched and I loved it. So going into the new season I had high expectations. There were a whole lot of story lines coming from every direction. Lots of emphasis on eyes from the fish eye lenses to the guy with his eyes cut out to Kathy Bates as Iris.
Did anyone notice Mare Winningham as the maid? What is that character about?
Lady Gaga was amazing. My son and I kept asking if they are vampires or what? What is real and what is hallucination? What did Kathy Bates mean when she told the Swedish girls they brought it on themselves when she was leading them out of that second room? Is Sally real or dead? What's going on with the little boy Holden? What is that thing that jumped out of the mattress and the one that raped the guy?
I don't see how anyone can be upset about the level of horror - that's what the show is about obviously. I am continually shocked it's not on HBO because it is so far over the line. I can't say I enjoyed this episode because there was so much going on, but certainly I am hooked to find out where things lead and end up. Is the entire thing a big hallucination of Kathy Bates? I will be watching. Definately.

I turned on AHS expecting gore, scares, horror, etc. But this IMO is like marimoose said: There is nothing scary about this show, just over the top heavy in shock factor. And that over the top shock factor made me not even interested in the characters or storyline. Raping someone isn't horrific enough--let's show this freaky thing that's being used, and continually close in on his face and screaming. They got their point across way before they got that detailed. And, the dude that was raping him (I'm assuming it was a guy, but maybe not), looking like he was wrapped in a condom, was just stupid I thought. I'm like everyone else--I watch t.v. to be entertained, but to me this wasn't entertainment. I am also surprised that this is allowed on basic cable.

I agree w/ marimoose & @devildog. I love, love, love me a good horror film. I don't even mind slasher movies. That man being raped was not horror. And it didn't add to the story at all, imo. Brutality for the sake of shock value just doesn't do it for me. Now, the Lady Gaga slasher stuff is fine. And the couple nailed to the headboard? Awesome. I'm just hoping they stay in that vein. I liked the second half better than the first and will give it another week or two. I have to admit, at this point I liked Freak Show better. Here's hoping!

I like horror films. I watched the first season of AHS and I liked it. I also got through season 2 Asylum. I didn't make it all the way through Coven, I lost interest. I watched a bit of Freak Show, but I just didn't like it. For Hotel, I was not able to make it past the Lady Gaga scene after the horrifying rape scene. It seems almost all the seasons focus on deviant sex to some degree or another. What's up with that? This season I just couldn't take it. It wasn't suspenseful, frightening or scary. I found it disgusting.

I love horror movies, Halloween, and anything creepy/spooky/scary. I loved season 1 - it was truly scary. But now it's not scary at all; it seems they just want to shock people so they will talk about it. I'll watch another episode or so, but if it doesn't improve I'm out. I'm really disappointed because I was hoping it would be more like the first season.

I thought they did too much too soon, and I agree that it's not very scary just gratuitous. Some suspense might be nice! I love the hotel itself (except for that weird, modern kids' room; I wish they'd kept that within the time period) and the costumes, though.

I haven't watched the new season and now I'm not sure I'll bother. lol. In fact, I've never watched this show at all, until today. My dd has been telling me to watch so I started with the asylum season, on Netflix. I'm on episode three and already know I won't keep going. It's just not grabbing me, and it is very gory that's for sure. Not that I mind that exactly...I do love a good horror movie. But this just isn't interesting me. Maybe I should try the season about the circus...?

Ryan Murphy has an obsession with male rape. I don't know why his horror shows have to be so tied up in brutal sex. I asked myself why I was watching. But I do think he does the first show for pure shock value. It will hone in more on stories etc. Just whack!

LOVED IT.
AMAZING.
I was worried about Jessica Lange being gone, but this might turn out to be my favorite season.
The imagery was just gorgeous. Lady Gaga was extraordinary.
Seriously, it was perfect and I cannot wait to watch more.
This is EXACTLY what I want and expect from AHS. It was scary, it was beautiful, it was over the top, it was perfection.

I got through 45 minutes...don't think I can do it. What I'm looking for is a AHS more based on suspense, scares, and story. This was a little too much for me!

I only made it through about 45 minutes and turned it off. I loved Season 1. So much so that I've been so disappointed in each following season that I've never finished them. I haven't watched any of Freak Show yet, but now that it will hopefully be available online or somewhere for free I'll give it a try.

I loved the first season, never watched the second season Asylum, LOVED the third season Coven (I think I might be the only person on the planet that liked it, lol) and I thought Freak Show was one of the dumbest series ever. I made it a few episodes and called it quits.

I said the same thing - out loud to no one, since I was watching alone - "Why am I watching this?" I did get better toward the end and I am reeeeaalllly hoping you're right and it will be more about the stories than the brutality as the season progresses. Fingers crossed . . .

I told her I wasn't liking the asylum season and she said to watch Coven, so that's on my list for tomorrow. I am NOT watching it tonight because as I said I'm home alone and I don't think I need that. lol. The Carol Burnett blooper reel is more what I need to watch before going to sleep by myself.

Report back what you thought of Coven. I've always loved witch movies, books...whatever. There was some over the top stuff, but not like Hotel. I think I remember the general consensus at 2Peas was people really disliked that one. Go figure, lol.

I LOVED Murder House (first season), and Hotel might be the season that has more of the same feeling as Murder House than any other season. And I liked Hotel. It will have a shocking beginning, and then they will start to unravel the story and let us know each character's backstory... and that is where the magic happens in AHS. I am intrigued by Hotel far more than I ever was with the other seasons after only watching the first episode. So I am very happy Also... the carpet in the lobby is a cope of the one in The Shining. I will be looking out for all sorts of nods to other movies, oher seasons, and references to real life stories that happened in the hotel it is based on (like the Eliza Lam case). Best season so far; Murder House. Best EPISODE so far; The one in Freak Show that gives us Pepper's backstory. Naomi Grossman deserved an award for that episode, it was truly gutwrenching and heartbreaking, and acted so real and tender by Ms Grossman. Not a 'horror' episode, although it is horrific in a way...

I just finished watching it (in the daytime because watching this show before bedtime has been known to cause nightmares!) I'm in the "loved it " camp. The stylizing was amazing! That's one of my favorite things about each season - how they create a unique mood to capture each different genre. i agree with rainangel that this has the promise of telling an interesting story, more in keeping with the first season. The characters are interesting and we have a lot to learn about their backstories. Yes, it's over the top in every way, but I think that's what makes it so compelling, and even humorous at times. I'm looking forward to more, whereas the last few seasons have had hit and miss episodes with me. Of course, they had to end with "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."

Not enjoying this season at all! Yesterday I watched the first episode and fell asleep part way through. Today I tried to watch the second episode and again, fell asleep! Murder House was the only season I've watched and enjoyed. I gave up on Asylum part way through and haven't attempted the others. So Hotel isn't for me at all. Ugh.

I watched right up to the rape scene, turned to my husband and said, "I just can't watch this season." We turned it off and deleted the series from the DVR. I was disappointed, as I was really looking forward to this theme.

Second episode was definitely better than the first and I'm at least seeing a story line emerge. I'll give it one more week before I decide.
