I haven't, but one of my friends did for a milestone birthday. It was a relaxed evening with appetizers and drinks in their home, and it was a wonderful time for everyone, most importantly for the guest of honor.

No but I wouldn't hesitate to if I was planning to pay for everything. In my world guests don't pay for anything unless it's potluck and I'd never throw myself a potluck birthday party.

Sort of. For my 40th, I wanted my sisters & closest friends and their spouses (6 couples) to come for a dinner party. I did the inviting and my husband set up the catering, ordered the cake, etc. So while he handled the logistics (even bought me a corsage!), I technically threw the party for myself.

My sister threw her own 50th last weekend.
I guess technically her husband threw it for her.. but she ordered all the food, and made sure the house was in order etc.
My brother in law and I provided the "signature" drinks.
It wasn't a suprise but it was just what she wanted and it was a lot of fun
I think there is nothing wrong with saying come celebrate my birthday with me.

Not in my own house but it's very common place among my group of friends for the birthday girl to choose what they want to do for the evening. One friend invited us out for dinner and a comedy club thing, I have invited them out for dinner or a movie. Everyone always pays their own way and there have been times I couldn't afford to go.

I don't care if other people throw themselves a party, but no, I never could. Even if it was a milestone birthday. It would be too weird. I don't like that much attention on myself.

I'm not planning on it, but my GF is throwing herself a 60th and she wanted to be able to choose who she spends her BD with so she invited 125+ of her closest friends via Facebook. And now she just updated the event and requested everyone wear gold because she is entering her golden years. I don't think I will be buying anything gold for myself and DH to wear.

Yes, I had one for my 60th birthday. We had an outdoor cookout/picnic-type party; family and friends were invited and we provided everything... food, drinks, music. It was great!
eta: it was a "no gifts requested - just the pleasure of your company" party as well...

I never have, I'm just not that kind of person. I'll be 45 in a couple of weeks...maybe for my 50th? But I'd mostly rather just take a nice trip with my husband for a milestone birthday.
I have a dear friend who is the hostess with the mostest, and she threw herself a 44th birthday party a couple of years ago that was really lovely. It was June, they had a long table on their back deck with five or six couples invited. We ate and drank and relaxed. Very nice if you can pull something like that off. I'm not sure I could! But the nice thing was that it wasn't "all about" my friend...she made it more of a celebration of all the people she loved. Hard to explain, but it was a memorable evening.

Yes. For my 40th birthday. I invited 10 couples and their kids over for a catered Mexican dinner and dessert. I asked for no gifts, just to come and enjoy the evening. It was one of my best birthdays to date.
I could have asked my husband to throw the party, but I knew exactly what I wanted. I didn't want to be mad or disappointed in him when he didn't deliver my expectations. My husband excels at many things, but party planning is not one of them. I wanted to still love him after my birthday.

Yes. I threw myself a party for my 30th birthday, and my 40th. Is this unusual? Lots of my friends organise their own parties; I've never found anything odd about it.

Sort of. I turn 60 in February. So I asked DIL is she would plan a family dinner party. No one tells her no! I want presents. I like presents. The only ones who get presents are the grandkids. But I'm turning 60 and I want presents. I'm getting a pretty dress too.

I guess I am guilty of this faux pas. When I turned 65 I invited my sisters and a few close girl friends for a party. The sisters spent the weekend with me and the friends came later for cake and laughs.
Last week was my 70th. My husband said, "Call a few of your friends and I'll treat you all to lunch," as well as cake and ice cream.
Both were "no gift" events--just a chance to have fun with people I really like.

I did for my 50th and then this year for my 52nd. I had always heard stories about people taking charge of their milestone birthdays and doing whatever they wanted. So, that is what I did for my 50th. My dad passed away in March and I wanted my birthday this year to be happy and different from what we typically do for my birthday. So, I planned a party at a nice restaurant and DH paid.

Sort of...for my 30th I wanted to play Laser Tag. So I invited my friends and their kids, told DH (BF at the time) I wanted pizza, laser tag and cake. So I did all the organizing and DH (BF) paid for it all.  He's a keeper! |

My Mom had a birthday party every year. She would make most of the food initially, but then we started buying food for it. Her birthday is December 30th so it's between Christmas and New Year's. So it was a post Christmas pre New Year's party.

When I turned 40 I had a pretty big party. I think there were about 50 people. We had heavy hors d'oeuvres, wine, champagne and cake.
When I turned 50 I had a sit down dinner for 16 people at my house--two tables of 8.
I had both of them catered.

For my 50th, I rented a ski house at Okemo in Vermont for a weekend and invited 4 other families to stay there and ski with us. For me, this was the party. It didn't occur to me that they would bring a cake and stuff because my birthday is in December and this was in February. That made me uncomfortable--the rest of it was fun.

I'm not getting the faux pax of throwing your own party? Is it because you consider it a gift grab? I think we tend to be a bit more casual here and less hung up on formalities that it isn't even on my radar. Everyone does it here particularly for milestone birthdays. I never bat an eyelid when I get an invitation from a friend for a 40th or 50th etc that they are organising. I love celebrating with people and for a lot of us if we left it to someone else to organise it would never happen.
After seeing a friend get mightily disappointed at not having anything for her 40th (she wanted her dh to throw a party) I decided I would organise my own big party with lots of friends and we had a ball. We supplied champagne, wine, beer etc and lots of finger food. I couldn't care less about gifts, I said I didn't want them but most brought along something.
