Did you find yourself buying lots of new supplies, BUT also revitalizing things in your scrapping stash you thought you were ready to pass on?
I'm finding, now that I'm making canvases and more "bumpy" things, that I'm looking at stuff that was in my "use up NOW!" and "purge pile" areas and pulling them out to put on my MM projects. I mean, yeah, I'm buying paints and embossing powders and pastes that I never would have needed before, but things like sequins.... MAN the sequins! And fibers. They're not something I'd use on layouts any more, not part of my style, but the mixed media projects are totally giving these things new life!
(I just think that's neat... that's all)

Yeah, I was just thinking about supplies in my place I could use in my art. Any ideas of household items you have used to make designs or have actually added to your art?
I have used the tops of things to make different size circles but need some new ideas.

Yes, I have bought SO much learning this new art. But I also have used old stash which is fun too. I used an old Bazzill alpha card on yesterday's journal page.

Cheesecloth for texture. Dyed it, added it as a foundation, and then a boarder around the canvas. I think that's the only regular kitchen item I've used.

Oh yes, Aeryn, I LOVE using cheesecloth but I use it more on my scrapbook pages and cards.

I didn't find myself buying lots of new supplies specifically for MM, they were already there, just feeling neglected. But I used to save lots of things to use, but I try to keep it to a couple of containers now, then I don't feel like a hoarder. (ok, less of one). And if I know I'm going to work on something, especially with dd in tow, then i'll save stuff that week.

I do more mixed media and altered art than scrapping and am always looking for ideas for canvases. A piece of bubble wrap ironed between two sheets of paper can be cut into great shapes. Fibres string and lace on canvases along with twisted and crumpled masking tape all covered with Gesso looks good. I have a really big collection of metal and plastic gears and bits as I make Steampunk miniatures. Not much gets thrown away around here.

When I signed up for the She Art class a few years ago, I invested in some quality acrylics and some liquid inks. I had a major stash of all the other materials though which it felt so good to use (MM foam stamps/acrylic paints/watercolors/ephemera etc). Once you start doing mixed media, it's hard to de-stash because you can always cover something up with gesso!

Phoenix, do you have a blog or flicker where we might see your steampunk work? I'd love to see all the little gears and such! I got a bunch of gears and keys from a friend of mine and I was at a total loss to put them on my pages. Now? STEAMPUNK CANVAS!!!

Aww, you're sweet! The "hedonistic" bit is a quote from Bones. I thought it was fun, hehe.
I like the idea of covering a journal. Usually I think of such things after the journal is full, so I don't wreck it, but you never know.

I have little canvas boards now and still have not tried to use them. They are the size of a postcard.
Also now have the bigger hard cover journal I got this past week...All the white pages just waiting for me to do...

Can anyone who uses Mists a lot advise me on a good brand please? I have a few Cosmic Shimmer ones that I had to decant into different bottles as they kept clogging. I usually use other colouring mediums but on the canvas I started yesterday I used a copper and several blues and like the effect. Mind you my fingers look like I have the lurgy. but I would still like to get some sprays suitable for Steampunk/grungy style work. Come on gailoh start flinging the paint around on those pristine white pages and canvases.

Don't worry phoenixcov You didn't kill it...but I probably will lol
I didn't really have to buy very much; I already had other supplies from various other crafts I've done. I think that's the nice thing about crafting hobbies, you really can multipurpose your tools and consumables.

As for sprays.....best I have used are the lindys stamp gang ones......never clog.....and if you do get one that clogs....they will replace it! I have been doing mixed media for a few years. I am a collector, so lots if bits get recycled into my mm scrap pages. I think the best things you can invest in starting out are media like gesso, gel medium, general art supplies like crayons, pencils, paints, water soluble neocolors are my faves

Haven`t tried neocolours but have recently bought some Gelatos and they are great. Also found a Utube video for home made sprays that I will try when I find the empty bottle that I know I have somewhere. Warm water, Mod Podge, metallic or plain acrylic paint and Perfect Pearls (optional). Anyone tried that yet?

Warm water, Mod Podge, metallic or plain acrylic paint and Perfect Pearls (optional). Anyone tried that yet? I did, but it didn't work well for me at all, I found it plugged my spritzer. And I had just used the paint and water combo. Maybe I did something wrong, I really wanted it to work, and it was several months ago since I tried it. I'm hoping someone else was successful and can tell me what I did wrong.

Well I`ve had a play around with making the spray with mixed results. I used an empty bottle that was a pain to work originally so need to try another bottle really. Used warm water with a dollop of Mod Podge and mixed well. Then added lots of dark green acrylic and a scoop of gold Perfect Pearls. There was a ball bearing in the bottle which help to mix it. Sprayed onto scrap paper and the colour and shimmer were great. Two problems, spray came out as blobs not a mist and soon clogged up. I dabbed the paint around with a scrunched up cloth and that looked good.
So home made colour sprays are easy to make and look good but finding a spray bottle to use them in might be more trouble than it`s worth in the long run.

That`s ok vronn, hope you get the chance to have another go. OH found me a spare spray bottle that works, did manage to lose the ball bearing down the sink though.

I *adore* my Dylusions sprays, for what it's worth. Originally I just bought them to be liquid watercolours, but I found the sprays worked so well together I've been using them more like that now. No clogs, no gross blobs, they're just so vibrant too! And I've never had them turn to mud when they mix. They just blend together nicely or keep their own colour.

I have mixed acrylic paint and water and also alcohol ink and water both worked well, have not put mod podge into the mix, could this be what is clogging your sprayer up? I have purchased acrylic paints, but am using a lot of my stash.

I'm finding that I 'm using a lot in my stash from earlier on. Some of my stamps that I once thought were kind of 'meh' are now taking on a whole new meaning in my art journal.

I use so much of my stash. You can just cover up parts of paper you don't like
I make my own mist with bottles from dollar tree. I put warm water in the bottle, a squirt of paint, then I stick the end of my paint brush in the mod podge and mix it up. Then I add loose eyeshadows I also got from the dollar tree for shimmer. They have not clogged once.
I also make my own alcohol inks with the dollar tree bottles. I take the cotton part out of dollar store 10 pack of markers and pour in rubbing alcohol. You can use any color or brand markers. I even make some "real" tea dye spray with a used tea bag.
I also love to make molding(or modeling???) paste from quick dry caulk and corn starch. Again, both from dollar tree. I am really cheap, lol.
