It's amazing that there are ever any heated arguments here considering everyone is so open minded and willing to see the other side

It's amazing that there are ever any heated arguments here considering everyone is so open minded and willing to see the other side I think there are some topics for each person that aren't up for debate. Even if we can see the other side. But most especially when we can't fathom the other side at all. There are a few topics on which I won't budge. Some of these ought to be universal or how do we form a society?

I am a registered Republican, but haven't voted republican in a while. I am more of an Independent. I am with the Democrats on social issues/defense and with the Republicans on financial issues/foreign relations. So no candidate feels like I do, so I have to look at which issues are most important to me, and vote that way.
Having been to law school, I am used to looking at both sides of the issue, even if I don't agree.

The biggest thing, however, that I've learned over the years is not to carry someone else's flag. People will always seek out someone more outgoing and assertive to carry the flag for their cause and I've found myself in that position for things that I'm only mildly interested in. And it has caused a lot of issues that I then felt like I had to buck up and stand behind when I wasn't really feeling it that strongly. I've learned that I carry my own flag and that's it. If you feel that strongly about your cause, YOU fight for it. I guess you could sort of call those grey issues. I still have an opinion, but not one that is strong enough to do much about. Oh you are so right. It took years before I realized that people were using me to fight for their causes. I tend to be very black and white on issues like feminism, LBGTQ, racism, and abortion issues. Those are things that I am willing to fight for, other things, not so much. I don't think well in terms of gray. It confuses me.

I don't think well in terms of gray. It confuses me. It was actually a revelation when I realized that it felt like I had a line of people behind me pushing me out front and center and then ducking behind or even scattering when bullets started to fly. But back to the "grey" thinking conversation, I have to say that I feel like some people believe that grey thinkers are open minded and people who think in black and white are close minded and it's usually said/communicated with sort of a snide edge to it. I don't see black and white thinking as a negative. In fact, although I don't personally think this way, couldn't it be said that grey thinkers are wishy washy and can't make up their own mind without being swayed by the opinions of others and that black/white thinkers are confident in their own moral belief system? Like I said, I don't believe that any more than I believe the open/close minded argument, but I'm about to bring that out every time that someone uses the "I'm open minded" comment in a way that is meant to be insulting. I honestly feel that anyone who claims to think in terms of grey actually only does so in a limited group of situations and likely has a large set of opinions that they are very firm (i.e. black/white) in.
