I'm looking for some info from any peas who've done a dolphin excursion at Blue Lagoon in Nassau the Bahamas.
We're on an upcoming cruise with a port day in Nassau. I've seen, on other threads, peas recommend Blue Lagoon.I've looked at their website and they have a dolphin encounter and a swim with dolphin excursion.
The problem? They don't have descriptions. Swim with dolphins is obvious but does anyone know what the dolphin encounter entails? What the difference is between the two other than price? Thanks, Kat

On ours, the ENCOUNTER is in waist deep water. You do not get to "swim". More or less you get to pet, hug and kiss the dolphin.

We watched the Dolphin Encounter at Blue Lagoon. The people stayed within a small covered area that iirc was maybe 15x15.
ETA: the Dolphins had a large lagoon area they swam in but would interact by swimming back into the enclosed area.

I did the Dolphin Encounter at Nassau April 2014. I would highly recommend it.
We did the most expensive one. We put on wet suits and got in the water. It was not shallow, we had to tread water. The dolphins came to each person and danced with them, kissed them, then we all had a little individual time with them. We got a picture taken individually and a group picture. They also made a DVD. All for sale after the session. You are welcome to bring your own camera, but make sure it's waterproof.
At the end, the dolphin did a foot push. you get in a Superman type position and the dolphin comes up and pushes on the soles of your feet and pushes you into a standing position. It was so much fun!
At the time we went, my son had a cast on and had to wear a bright blue cast cover. The dolphins did not want anything to do with him. Apparently dolphins do not like to deal with broken (unfamiliar) people. The trainers asked up to stay so they could train the dolphins on what to do with a cast and realize that it was no big deal. By the end of the private training session, only one dolphin would come to him, the other avoided him like the plague. I really loved the patience the trainers showed as well as the willingness to try to work to help the dolphins feel comfortable.
I would highly recommend this excursion. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer.

They are bad for the dolphins. It doesn't make sense to do something because you like dolphins that makes their lives more difficult. Please read up on this before you decide to do it.

We also did this 4 res ago. We did the same things that Honeyb mentioned. We all loved it. I even got in the water. I hate to get my hair all wet.

We did the one through Atlantis and it is my understanding that Atlantis does research and helps injured animals. We got to snorkel with Athena and later that year they released her back into the wild.
Their fourteen acre marine habitat is also one of the largest and most advanced dolphin rescue and rehabilitation facilities in the Bahamas.
So definitely research and decide what works for you!

dolphins are wild animals. bears and bison are wild animals...for the sake of wild animals..stay away from them and enjoy from a distance. don't encourage the "disneyfication" of animals. they are not here for our sake.

I didn't have an opinion on this until our cruise stopped in Freeport.
My husband and I paid a local to take us on a private boat ride around the island, and into the waterways between the vacation homes. He took us to one area that had a dolphin excursion going on, and it was depressing as hell.
Instead of open ocean, the dolphins were penned in the dark water of this canal. All the tourists were smiling and laughing, really excited to be there, but they were completely oblivious to the conditions they were kept in, and the fact that a couple dolphins were "pacing" back and forth in a specific, monotonous pattern as the waited.
It was weird being excited to see the dolphins, but also guilty as hell sitting there in my boat snapping pictures of them pacing because I could predict when they would pop up.
Consider a whale or dolphin watching excursion out on the open water, or visit Blue Lagoon just for the beach and scenery. I couldn't live with myself knowing I contributed to their capture like that.
