We saw the orthopedic doctor today. We had heard already that there were no tears in his knee, so we were prepared for good news. So, while the news isn't terrible, for ds it was definitely crappy. Turns out he has a piece of broken bone and cartilage. If the chip had escaped the knee he would need surgery immediately, but because his growth plate isn't completely closed he can try a conservative process of no weight-bearing for a month and see if it starts to heal by itself. He's 18, so the growth plate is all but closed, so chances aren't great. If it doesn't show improvement over time, than he will need surgery to try to avoid arthritis. His football season is over, most or all of his basketball season probably is too. Hopefully he won't take it too hard. He's a smart kid, but athletics is his thing, and was frequently his incentive to do what he needs to do in school.
. Ds is scheduled for an MRI tomorrow, but the ortho is pretty confident it is a torn ACL, which surprised all of us. The coach looked at the game film and said it was a "stinger" and expected him to play this Friday. Not gonna happen. What we believe occurred is that he was hit twice by the same player, once in the shoulder and once in the side of the thigh, which caused ds to pivot and resulted in the tear. Another player in our 6 Man football team tore his ACL in the same game and had to be carried off the field. We don't get to see the doctor to officially get the results until Tuesday, but dd works for the same clinic and might be able to get the results earlier. This really sucks for ds, who is a senior and might be done with sports for the year. Big picture, however, we know there are much worse sports injuries.
Friday night, during a 6 Man football game, my 18 year old son was hit in the thigh by another boy's knee. He continued playing and only looked a little gimpy. His thigh and knee swelled, bruise showed up, and his pain increased. I believe he has very low pain tolerance, but he has been in a lot of pain, which gets away from him and makes him unable to recognize that the pain has increased (I did this during labor). He has taken Vicodin. Now, his leg is still swollen and he says he can't put weight on it without terrible pain to his knee and hip. Yesterday morning he wouldn't get up to go to the clinic that the local orthopedic doctors do for Saturday mornings for football players because he was too tired, so dh says we have to wait until Monday to take him to the doctor.
Does anyone have experience with a deep thigh bruise? Does this sound like more, considering your own experience? TIA.

Take him to the ER! Deep thigh bruises/injuries can lead to blood clots. That much swelling screams blood clot to me. Please please please take him in immediately. This is nothing to play around with.

When it comes to kids (which I don't have) I would err on the side of caution. Take him to the ER.

You had me really concerned up to the "he was too tired" to get up and go to the clinic. To me, that tells me it doesn't really hurt that bad. Has he iced and ace wrapped it? What have you guys done besides pain med's?

What have you guys done besides pain med's? We have kept it iced and elevated, but not wrapped. We are familiar with clots and Compartment Syndrome due to earlier experiences with dd1's leg. His leg is warm, but not hot, and the swelling isn't extreme or disfiguring, and it hasn't changed much since Friday night. We are watching him very closely, he's in the same room as I am at all times, except when he's using the bathroom. I appreciate everyone's advice. Thanks.

Not that you apparently want advice suggesting you take your son in to be seen by professionals a.s.a.p., but you do know that the risk of dvt/clots is hereditary, especially when it shows up in people under 45, don't you? So that since his sister has had clotting issues, he is at much higher risk? And that not all clots present the same in terms of symptoms, so what it looked like in your dd, may be different than what is going on with your son? Please take him in.

The problem with my daughter's leg was a result of injury. She fell off a SeaDoo, a ski rope wrapped around her leg and she was dragged for a while. She lost about half to three fourths of her calf and had a latissimus muscle transfer. I am taking him in, though. And I do appreciate everyone's concern and advise.

I wouldn't guess compartment syndrome... The pain that usually goes along with that is just unyielding, nothing will touch it, etc. Sounds maybe more like a hematoma? Generally those just reabsorb, though they def can be painful. I would take him in considering he says he can't bear weight, but it is Monday so I'm sure that's what you're doing . Keep us updated!

I had a deep thigh bruise once from running into a pole. I was running full speed, didn't notice a pole sticking out and wacked the heck out of my thigh. I remember being worried the next morning when my lower leg was swollen to the extend I didn't have an ankle. I don't really remember the pain being excessive though, I definitely could put weight on it. I did have it checked out, and it was normal and reabsorbed over a week or so. Hope everything checked out okay for your son.

How's your son? With two teen sons and our own handful of weird injuries, he's been on my mind.

Hopefully it's just a bad sprain and he will be able to play his winter and/or spring sport. My DS was a starting lineman his junior year, playing both offense and defense. He got a concussion in the spring snow boarding and barely played his senior year. He had lost his confidence and the school considered him high risk for an injury. He was so disappointed to lose what should have been his glory year. Personally, I was grateful that he was kept on the team for his morale, but played very little.

Why was he taking a Vicodin? Do you just have them laying around?

Why was he taking a Vicodin? Do you just have them laying around? It was his own prescription that he has for an ongoing shoulder problem--also due to a football injury.
