Anyone have Lasik surgery and then try contacts later? I had Lasik eye surgery about 13 years ago. It has done me well, but now that I am over 40, I need a boost in dim lighting and for night driving. I am finding that I am pulling out my glasses more and more. My eye dr. said I could do contacts again. I am looking for your experiences.
I am resisting because I don't want to wear contacts or glasses, but at the end of the day I had 13 years of better than 20/20 vision and I should be thankful for that.

Your question is interesting. I've never heard of someone having Lasik then having to go back to regular glasses versus having to use reading glasses around 40. I wish I had advice for you. I will be following this conversation. I've been thinking about getting Lasik at 47 but know I will still need reading glasses.
Can the doctor update/re-work your surgery?

Your story sounds very similar to mine. I had Lasik about 10 years or so ago. Now I am 50, and I have an astigmatism that has returned, and of course I need glasses for tiny print now. I did try contacts last year. Prior to Lasik, I had worn contacts for at least 16 years. The contacts after Lasik did not work for me. It's like my eyes were much more sensative to having them in my eyes. We even tried all of the latest comfort contacts and nothing worked for me. I have glasses with progressive lenses now that I wear when I read and do close-up work. I also wear them when driving at night. I cannot wear them full time as glasses have always given me a headache. I have never had a pair of glasses that don't after so many hours. I hope you find something that works for you.

Same story here. I had Lasik in 2000. About 9-10 years after I noticed distance just wasn't crisp anymore so I started wearing glasses for driving. I can get by with out them, but it's easier and safer to just wear them. My doc said I could do either glasses or contacts.

I had lasik in 1998. Probably about 5 years ago I developed astigmatism in one eye. And it's gotten worse every year. I can do fine without correction in most cases, but for reading, driving at night/in rain, and computer distance I struggle. I got a contact for the astigmatic eye, but it doesn't reliably correct it. And the glasses only seem to magnify. If I close my good eye, I can't see out of the bad eye in glasses. I need to go to the eye doctor again, but as of right now, I haven't found a good solution and it's frustrating.
As to the contact experience, I don't wear it every day. But it's not uncomfortable at all. And the doctor had no issue with me wearing it post-lasik.

Your eye dr will give you a trial pair to try. You don't need to order a whole pack unless you like them.

I had Lasik 15 years ago and was back in glasses for dim light and driving after 8 years. I thought maybe I could never wear contacts again since I had Lasik but I wear contacts with no problem. I tried about 6 different brands before I settled on daily wear Acuvue Moist. They are so comfortable I can't even tell I have them in.

I had mine done back in 2000 in Canada. They told that they would not be able to get my vision back to 20/20 because my eyes were so bad and my corneas were not thick enough. I had to wait a year but I have been wearing contacts since. I am 55 so I do need reading glasses. I may try mono vision again next time I see my eye doctor

I had Lasik done about 15 years ago, and over the last couple of years my long distance vision has been getting gradually worse. I also didn't want to go back to having to wear contacts or glasses, but my vision has deteriorated too much to see well enough while driving. I figure I got many years of better than 20/20 vision, and I still think it's the best money I've spent. I finally got glasses a few weeks ago. So far I am only using them for driving and at the football. I only bought a cheap pair of glasses because I'm still considering getting contact lenses again, so I didn't want to spend hundreds on glasses.

I was pre-lasik, I had radial kertatomies (where they used a scalpel to cut into your cornea) in 1991, so 24 years ago. I got my first pair of glasses 4 years ago. The main reason I vision correction surgery was because I never tolerated contacts well, and I tend to have watery eyes, so contacts spin around in my eye and I end up with blurry vision anyway (I have an astigmatism as well so my contacts had makings on them for the top and the bottom and they need to stay the right way up in the eye). Now I have normal vision in one eye, but need bifocal correction for my right eye. I tried a contact lens again for that eye, and I found I could tolerate wearing it, but it constantly spun around and I'd have my finger in there turning the contact back to the right position all the time. It just wasn't worth the hassle. I just had my eyes tested again last week and they haven't changed much in 4 years. I'm fine during the day, I only wear the glasses if I need to read small print, especially at night. I finally got glasses a few weeks ago. So far I am only using them for driving and at the football. I only bought a cheap pair of glasses because I'm still considering getting contact lenses again, so I didn't want to spend hundreds on glasses. Meg check out Zenni I read about them here, they post to Oz for $4.95 (prices in $US) because I had a new prescription, I asked for a copy and ordered a cheapo pair of glasses through them, so I could take them to work, carry them round in my bag etc and it won't matter so much if I lose them. I ordered a pair and they have posted, just waiting for them to arrive, but the cost ended up being (US)$49 for the frame and lenses!...in contrast, my new lenses being put into my previous frames were $180 from the optometrist here.

Wow, that's a good deal! I should look into them for a cheap pair of reading glasses because my new ones are only for long distance. Mine only cost $50 as well because I bought a kids pair (apparently I have a small pin head!) and my SIL owns an optometry business. Otherwise I would have been up for $200+.

Ah yes, a SIL like that would be very handy! Even with private insurance and a reasonably cheap frame ($200), 4 years ago it came to over $400 and I was still $150 out of pocket. So I'm willing to give the cheap ones a try. I'm only getting reading glasses as well, not progressive lenses. But there's been a few threads about buying glasses online here, and most people seem to have had good experiences.

I also had Lasik done about 15 years ago, with 2 enhancements to one eye and one to the other. My distance vision has deteriorated quite a bit. I was avoiding night driving and noticed that I was squinting when I went to school band concerts, etc. One time we were traveling at night and I was driving, on the expressway. I could not judge the distance between our vehicle and the car ahead of me, so I kept slowing down and braking. I had to pull over and tell dh that I just could not drive. I visited the ophthamologist this summer, and now I have glasses. It's almost funny-- unlike dh who needs to pull papers and his phone away from his eyes to see them, I need to pull them closer. My close vision is fine. My doctor didn't say anything about contacts, though. I am not happy to be back in corrective lenses at all-- I was so dependent upon them previously because my vision was not at all functional. I'm kicking and screaming a bit, and only wear the glasses when I need to. But they really do make a significant difference. Lasik was the best money I've ever spent, and even with the enhancements it was worth it. It was a great 15 years. I'm definitely a little disappointed that that is it for me, but at the same time I knew that it wouldn't last forever. I just hoped that it would.

I still have some flex health care $$ to spend before the end of the year. I think I will get some trial contacts and maybe some prescription sunglasses. I know I have to bite the bullet, I am really thankful the Lasik lasted as long as it did. Thanks for all the info.!
