We have watched the first two episodes of a Blood and Oil. I think it has a lot of potential. But neither of us can hardly understand the dialog because the background music and sound effects are so loud they drown out what they are saying. Also, it's filmed so dark that I get several of the guys mixed up.

Between background music, scripted applause, whispered lines and family background noise, we've been watching most shows and movies at home with closed captioning on for a few years now. I got tired of missing so much of what was being said!

I don't watch this show but we have noticed it on many shows recently. Grey's is one and The Blacklist is another. So much background music and noise that it's hard to hear the dialog. I know some people use sub-titles but we hate doing that.

Check and see if there is a sound setting on your TV. I switched mine so that the background stuff isn't as loud. It has helped.

I know some people use sub-titles but we hate doing that. Grey's is the worse!!! The music is so loud and doesn't always fit the scene...it really is distracting and hard to hear the dialouge - it wasn't like that on old episodes but has been this way for the past 4-5 years I have also notice how dark Blood and Oil is filmed...even the day time outdoor scenes are not very light.

I got tired of rewinding everything 5 times trying to figure out what the heck was said, so now I just put on the closed captioning.

I hate how everything is so dark! It is like there is some kind of rule that they can't use lights any more. You have to turn off all the lights off in the house, turn around three times, sit on only your left buttock and squint with one closed in hopes of seeing the details. I haven't watch Blood and Oil, but so many other shows are like this. I hate it.

We were watching a show on regular tv that I have on DVD. The music was so loud we couldn't hear the words. On the DVD it is not that way. I think the tv stations need to look at their controls.

I've given up watching certain shows without closed captioning due to that very problem. It's especially bad on Elementary, on which Johnny Lee Miller talks in a raspy whisper all the time.

I watched the pilot & found it was a hassle to hear the dialogue! This is one of the reasons I've not watched another episode...

I'm so glad we're not the only ones!! My DH and I have been moaning about this issue for several years. It's not just on TV, it's in the movies too. We've pretty much stopped going to the movies because of it. The background music/noise has gotten unbelievable OVER the dialog; used to be background music was that... in the background. Now it takes over everything. Totally annoying.

I can't watch it because it is North Dakota with mountains , but I do hate the shows that are really dark.

I only watched the first one. I had a hard time following what was going on.First they lose their washing machines, then somehow he manages to trade or barter his way into getting a bunch of cash to buy some land? I have the next two on DVR but I doubt I end up watching it.

Similarly, I've been wanting a medical drama to get into since ER ended... I'm liking Code Black - except it's so dark... I like seeing the scenery and background of ERs... I like feeling like the doctors *must* be real because they can see where they're inserting tubes... I like the focus it puts on the storyline - a dark atmosphere makes me feel like part of the suspense is completely fake and manufactured by adding shadows and the possibility of a zombie showing up...

So, other than the sound problem, is Blood & Oil worth watching?
And I often find myself rewinding the tivo trying to figure out what someone on a show is saying, it's a good thing we live in the age of technology as we get older...

Another problem with this show--there are no mountains in North Dakota. It is totally flat. No hills, nothing. Blood and Oil is filmed in Utah, and there are mountains there, but set in ND where there are no mountains.

Didn't know that about the mountains. The only one we've watched in the past with captions is Downton Abbey.

I agree.
I didn't make it through the first episode.
