This is such a hard age to buy for because they no longer want "toys" and one of the high-wish items can blow the budget. It is doubly hard because my son has a December birthday as well.
My son already has a phone, he got Beats last year, got an X-box last year, etc
He does need (and want) a new bike
He needs golf clubs too (again, a total budget buster)
He got Lebron shoes last year for his birthday but has out grown them
What smaller items are on your young teen's list that are still wanted and appreciated, but not crazy expensive?

Subscriptions to services like Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, etc if you don't already have family accounts.
New controller for the x-box --- they do wear out. The buttons get "loose."
Armband for phone to be hands-free for activities.
If he got Beats headphones, do the earbuds... or vice-versa.
Socks. My 14 y/0 can wear out socks faster than you can blink. And he likes the pricey "performance" socks.

I second the socks, they seem to be a fashion thing for boys around here.
My son wants a gopro so that will be his big gift. I'll round things out with a few smaller lego sets, new shorts, socks and a video game of some sort and maybe a subscription to loot crate.

My almost 13yo isn't your typical kid but a couple of things from his list? A video gaming chair - I found one at Target with my red card for just over $30. He also asked for a North Face or Nike sweatshirt. He still plays his DS in the car so he asked for a new DS game. I'm also going to buy him a new hat of some sort. I found an UA one that I think he'll like.

My son is all about the socks, but not sure he would be that excited to get them as a gift. He loves to go to Subway with his friend, so I'm thinking food gift cards.

Mine is grown now but... gift cards - to fast food places are always a hit junk food - my son liked good (imported) chocolate bars but you'll know your son's likes best gadgets - fun flash drive, USB hub, book lamp, earbuds, 'credit card' survival kit, bendy flashlight tools - we started my son's toolbox at that age...screwdrivers, hammer, wrenches, pliers, picture hanging kit...stuff like that goes in the stocking each year. - both ideas prepare them for moving out eventually

We got my now 13 year old, a toolbox with a few tools for his birthday last year, thanks for the reminder to add things to it this year. And besides a go-pro, a PS/Xbox game or two, and PS gift cards, socks is his number 1 thing as well!

Mine is a self-proclaimed nerd and his bday list from last month had several different Rubik' s cubes (a pyramid shape and a mega-something), a body pillow, a soccer ball, an air bazooka, gift cards, and money.

My nephews are 12, but assuming they have similar tastes to 13yos. They are into surfwear and brand name sporting wear (Adidas, Nike etc). NBA basketball singlets and EPL soccer jerseys. And of course, socks! Gift cards to Boost Juice, Subway, Cold Rock (ice cream franchise). Games for the X Box (although they're hardly cheap). Balls.... football, soccer, basketball, handball, cricket.... my son now wants a gridiron ball, and we don't even play gridiron here!

My 14 year old son wants one gift...
A PS4. That's it.
I'm trying to figure it out. He's a great kid and doesn't get much during the year. He has a first generation Xbox 360 that we got for him used. He has not asked for anything else.
I will get him gift cards to food places, starbucks, and ITunes. He will also get socks and he loves shoes and has mentioned this past summer about Air Jordans. If the PS4 doesn't come about (asking FIL to split it with us), then those will be on the list.

So far, the only thing he's asked for is the new Star Wars game for Playstation. He wants to go see my brother over spring break so maybe a contribution toward the airline ticket?
