Hi, this is a little PSA, about situation I just encountered. I'm sure it's not true everywhere, so please don't blast me. Our youth service group has stopped volunteering at a local dog rescue this semester. We learned not all the dogs are vaccinated and our national organization, as well as local, doesn't want to risk the liability with the kids. No one had ever thought to ask, we discovered it through a random comment. It's expensive for the rescue to treat each dog, so I understand their stance. this might not be an issue for adults But we were surprised, and kind of reeling after taking 100s of kids through there over the years. tincin dog bite thread and the a recent thread about under ten year old volunteers reminded me. Again, I don't think it should stop the average person from volunteering. But it was something we wish we had known.

Wow, that's a real liability. You'd think they would at least vaccinate for rabies if not others. My daughter volunteers but they vax all animals right away there.

Our little board is astounded. We're not exactly a laid back community, its like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Luckily we had no incidents!

Children are not allowed to volunteer at our Animal Control. I had wondered why and I bet that's it. Our Humane Society does vaccinate all animals, and children (over a certain age) are allowed to volunteer with a parent.

We just had a news story locally of a woman volunteer who was working in a shelter and was bitten by a dog. She had to okay out of pocket (over $17,000) to get the rabies shots.

Was there a reason they suspected it was rabid? I thought if they had the dog, they could quarantine it for 10 days and if it acted funny during that time, then they get the shots, but otherwise it means it didn't have rabies. Or if it was going to be put down they could have it checked for rabies.

When I was bit (bitten?) the doctors said it was risky for a human to wait the quarantine period to begin shots. they suggested a 1-2 day delay at most. That's been a few years, I don't know if opinion has changed.
