I've started my Christmas shopping and have been knocking out the kids' lists. My 11 DD put a Penny Skateboard. I know nothing about skateboards and this would be her first one. Can you talk to me about where to get a board and what to look for? She said her friend has a penny board and it's narrower than other boards?
Thanks for your help!

I personally don't like the narrow boards, not as easy to stay up on, to many wobbles. If she is just being casual, I'd go with an inexpensive deck. Skateboards are costly, wheels & trucks make a difference. Not sure what the deal is with Penny boards, could be a fad, but I prefer longboards & slalom boards. I just like to ride on the street casually. I have 2 Sector 9's. I like my trucks with more give, easier to turn. Above all, be safe, never skate with out a helmet & pads.

Penny boards are a very specific type of small, brightly colored plastic board. They are fun and trendy and she will not be happy if you buy her some other type of skateboard. ETA Costco was carrying them, not sure if they still are. I know you can get them at Tilly's and Amazon.

Even though a bigger board would be easier to to ride, a penny board is the in thing and she would most likely be disappointed with anything else. My 11yo son has a hot pink penny board, it's pretty cool!

These things are all over my college campus. I agree, don't buy her another type of skateboard if this is the type she wants. That would be really disappointing.

My son is getting one this week. He says that the true ones come from pennyskateboards.com. They are over $100 on their site. However, I have found them for $70ish on Amazon. So we will be going through there. He says they are fun to ride. Seem to be the latest thing now.

Yes I meant to mention the price in my other post...... the "real" penny boards that they sell at surf and skate shops here are $100+. The one my son got was a knock-off, it was a gift from "Santa" at my work Christmas party a couple of years ago. There was no way I was going to spend $100 for my then 9yo son on something that I wasn't even sure would get a lot of use.

Don't spend too much. Mine wanted one and a ramp as her big gift. Days later she was done with it. If they don't have someone to teach them and the patience to learn it's all going to be a waste.

My son had several expensive boards custom built with decks, trucks and wheels he picked and a long board that was pricey but he prefers the Penny board the past couple of yrs. Kids ride them to the bus stop or school and can put them in their backpacks.
I usually order from CCS.com for skate stuff. They will have discounts for Black Friday and near the holidays.
