OMG, yes I heard a young woman use this phrase! He was going to give her a right proper scolding for using their credit card.
I am surprised that my head didn't pop off

Maybe she sits around coloring all day and charging shit when she shouldn't be. Husbands get a say in the finances too.

I was just going to say, I like it when my husband scolds me...lol...
It happens so very rarely, he's usually so laid back and let's me be in control of everything. So when he scolds me for something, I usually really sit up and take notice.

Lol. I've said that same thing before. Even when I was the breadwinner for the family. All tongue in cheek. I love right proper scolding. So much more refined than shit a brick. Although I've used that one too

Lol I had a friend in HS like that. We werent even graduated and she was married with a house and a kid. She would say stuff like this all.the.time. When her husband came home she would take his shoes off and wash his feet for him in one of those hospital pans, it was the craziest thing ever!

^^^ not to hijack the thread too much, but I read an article about them, and thought the husband would look pretty hipster-ish, if he was taken 'out' of the Victorian setting... I wonder if today's hipsters realize how *historical* some of them look?? (eta: I take it back; after looking at the photos on their blog, her husband looks much more dapper than most hipsters.) and I also wondered where you were (as in geographically)... I would have thought England somewhere...

Although I've used that one too I'm usually the one who's more inclined to be doing the scolding in our house...and the brick sh!tting.

Is it possible she was joking? My BFF and I have been known to say things that would probably sound just as strange when taken out of context. In fact, I could totally see one of us saying what's in the OP if, say, we had been earlier having a conversation about why we could never, ever be Duggar women.

Sounds like something I would say. There would be a wink involved, but if you only heard her, then perhaps you missed the smirk, wink, etc. that would clue one into the fact that she was joking. DH is always teasing me for "talking like your (meaning my) grandmother".

She was American, but I think that she might have been some sort of weird off the beaten track rainbow tribe type.

I could see it happening. I have friends that have their own secret credit cards and accounts that their husbands don't have access to. These are the people that hide stuff that they've bought in their cars and closets too. I know many people who don't work outside the home and their husbands totally control finances. Definitely not the lifestyle for me, but it's not outside of the realm of possibility among people I know personally. (Not saying this applies to all sahms/sahws but I have definitely seen it.)
I could also see me saying something like that as a joke.
People are interesting.

Although I've used that one too I think when you teach you learn to say a lot of off the cuff responses more eloquently. My favorite saying is get you poop in a group. I didn't say it to my class, but oh, I thought it.

If her exact words were "a right proper scolding" then I think that is kind of delightful. What a lovely phrase. Nowadays you are so much more likely to hear something much more profane.
And as far as the husband scolding her for spending the money, that's none of my business.

Or, you know, maybe she's an "Outlander" fan. Haha! I know I am late to the party, but I just discovered this series last month. I have read them all and am waiting for the next book to release. I just loved the series!
