Long story short for a short while I had a bedroom to myself for scrapping and lost my space to one of my kids, moved downstairs temporarily into the main dining room and am now moving into the unformal dining space between the kitchen and the family room...
One "wall" is the back of the kitchen cabinets, the upper cabinets actually have doors on both sides so I can't hang anything on them.
One "wall" is a window and there is a small few feet of wall space between the window and the family room sliding door, there is also a transition from laminate floor to carpet in the middle of this wall and I'm trying to stay on the laminate floor side.
The other two sides are open to the family room and is the walkway between the family room, garage, downstairs hallway (laundry area), backyard and the kitchen.
So how the heck do you put a scrap room in this space? Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

I have part of our bedroom as my scrap/craft area. I don't hang anything because plaster walls are a pain in the butt for that. I do have shelves, cubes, an Ikea office unit that has space for paper, and a shelf unit on my desk. It's a pretty small area also but I can get in and out of it.

I currently have my space in the back corner of my dining room/great room. I have it divided by my Expedite. I made a fabric back for it and thats what faces the dining table and my desk and stuff is on the other side. Its not ideal but works for now until my son leaves for college and I can move in to that room.

My scrap area is at my dining room table. Which happens to be in our basement. Which happens to also be our family room. Not the most conducive to scrappy inspiration.
I was able to commandeer a nearby closet and that's where all my stuff is stored and I simply work at the table. Is this a possibility for you?

I have a section of the family room -my scrapbook table (6ft white folding table) has the short end against the window and juts into the room (there's a second 6ft table butted up against it along the window/wall for sewing/computer).
My stuff is on and under the table (and there's a 4-drawer unit next to it at the end). it works for me but I don't have a TON of stuff

It sounds like you are in what we call the breakfast nook. My best advice would be to have a low shelf (like an IKEA expedit type thing) with bins or baskets so stuff could be pulled out when needed but sort of hidden otherwise. And yes, you are going to have to adjust! Put stuff away somewhere nearby. Make up kits. Put stuff in rolling totes that can be rolled out when working, but put away when not working.Good luck! This will be a transition for you I'm sure!

I don't own a ton of stuff but not having storage that is more than 3 feet high I am not sure how I am going to keep my kids out (the youngest is almost 1), not being able to divide off the space with bookcases (because they can't be anchored to the wall since there aren't any walls) how to keep it separate from the rest of the room (so it doesn't become a dumping ground), and the area is visible from the front door... there is a closet I could use but it's down the hall. Maybe I can get a really giant baby gate and put my stuff inside the gate... like a scrappy play pen I was thinking of two tables in an L shape but tables in my house seem to be clutter magnets.

Doesn't sound ideal but I scrapped for years on the dining table with everything stored in another room. I like the suggestion of some low storage and a desk. Or what about one of those home office in a cupboard type setups? Not sure if that would work in the space you have?

Oh you have little ones! OK, that changes things!!! Yeah, it really is hard for me to keep any big surface clutter-free. I like the scrappy playpen idea!!!!
