We're visiting in November and doing a carriage ride in the park then taking the train over to Hoboken to get a cupcake at Carlo's bakery. It'll be my birthday that day so that will be my birthday cake! LOL Anyway, we were going to do lunch at Tavern on the Green for the novelty of it but the menu didn't look inviting. Told DH I'd rather have New York Pastrami on rye or a Rueben! Any recommendations?

I know nothing of the city other than what I'm learning on trip advisor! Is that far away?

Angelina's Sandwich Shop on 6th Avenue. Loved their Thanksgiving Dinner sandwich.

Can't think of a good Jewish deli in that area. And if you want the best pastrami, that's where you need to be... a good Jewish deli.
All the best delis are further downtown. A favorite that is not Katz's is Ben's on 38th, in the heart of the garment district in midtown. The pickles, which are to die for, are on the tables... you can munch on them while you are waiting for your order. Everything there is to perfection. 100% authentic. Just like grandma used to make, or like my mom used to make, for real! It's not as far down as the others, with the exception of the more touristy Carnegie deli and Stage Door deli. Nothing wrong with those either, except that the Carnegie Deli is closed for some upgrades right now.

Zabar's is in the Upper West Side at Broadway & W 80th just a couple blocks west of the Natural History Museum and Central Park (maybe a mile from Tavern on the Green?). I have only bought food (bread, cheese, pastrami, etc.) to go but I thought they had a cafe next door. Worst case, you can buy everything you need for a picnic in the park.

It is on the Upper East Side, but worth a walk across the park. We visited on our last trip and it is on the list for the next one. E.A.T. - Eli Zabar

Now Katz is really the only thing I want to eat right now. Dang being pregnant and living in CA and not having easy access!

I'm heading out there in a few days, and now I think I'm going to have to get down to Katz's for their chopped liver sandwich (sorry for those who think it's gross). It's as close to my mom's as I've ever had...

Zabar's on Broadway is the first place I thought of, too. I don't eat meat, so can't vouch for the pastrami, but I have a girlfriend who makes a pilgrimage there for "real Jewish food" every time she comes to town.
