My girls have a built-in shelf/desk combo in their room. It is painted white and over the years of use it has gotten stained and dingy, and just isn't the best surface for a desk.
I've put down contact paper in the past but am looking to freshen things up with something more durable that doesn't involve sanding or repainting (because I think we'll be back to square one). I was thinking about getting a piece of laminate cut to fit the dimensions of the desktop, but does anyone have any other creative ideas?

A magic eraser will clean that right up.
Other than that, I would probably rip the thing out and replace it with book selves.

What about repainting/refinishing and then getting a glass topper cut to fit? Or letting them put photos and such under the glass? Pretty wrapping paper?
And depending on the size of the desk, you might even be able to get a large enough piece of remnant granite/stone at a discount. I would think a solid surface would be more durable than laminate for kids.

How about getting a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the area and letting them put pictures, papers they have colored, etc. underneath. Unless the base is smooth, the laminate might show the defects in the current surface. Just a thought. ETA: BigBundt and I must have been typing at the same time.

I would use glass over plexi, it's clearer, easier to clean and scratches less. if you have it cut to fit and the place can't buff the edges for you, you can do it with fine, wet sandpaper to take the sharp edge away.

I own a glass shop so I'm biased, but I'd put a piece of glass on it. Depending on how big it is you'll want 1/4" (most likely) and maybe tempered. Don't put plexi on it, it will scratch very quickly and yellow.

If the desk surface itself is pretty smooth, you could get a really fun "skin" for it from Blik. They are VERY cool and have lots of designs, and I would imagine they are pretty durable since that's what they were designed for. They're pretty reasonably priced too. Blik Surface Skins

I only suggested plexi because I don't know how old her girls are. My preference personally would be glass.

Modpodge! Let them put pictures from magazines and then a few coats of MP hard coat. OR you can get cute wrapping paper or wall paper or scrapbook paper and put it down and MP over it,
