DH's birthday is next week and I'm stumbling around what to get him. This morning I hear an advertisement for the Echo and think that sounds pretty cool. It'd be a nice new gadget for him and the whole family. So I get all excited that I've found the perfect gift and go look it up. My jaw dropped when I saw the price of $179. We can easily afford it, but it's not a normal price range for us. We just don't buy electronics very often because of the sticker shock.
We are not high tech. We have smart phones and one old Samsung tablet. No smart TV, heck we don't even have a flat screen tv. We are the type, if it's not broke, don't replace it. We do have EXCELLENT wifi at home though through cable.
So here's the questions:
Is there any coupon codes out for this? If I sign up for Prime, will there be a discount for the echo? (I thought I heard that on the advertisement but can't confirm it)
If both answers are no, would you recommend biting the bullet and get it anyway? I do think we could get a lot of use out of it.

I just checked it out on my Amazon account (I have Prime) and it was $179. However, I already have one, so that *might* change things. I did get it for $99 when it was still in presale or beta or whatever you'd call it. I'm actually kind of bummed, too, as I'd considered asking for a second one for my birthday for a different area of the house, but can't justify that much money for a second one.
We could live without it, but it is really nice. We use it mostly for music (surprisingly great sound) and to find out the weather forecast. I also love the timer/alarm clock function.
I would definitely buy it again for the $99 price. I'm not sure if I personally could justify the $179, but I'm not sure I couldn't, either. If it's something that your household would use and would make a good present (in other words, it's basically serving two purposes, lol), and you can afford to spend the $179, it's probably a good idea.

I have been getting messages from Amazon offering me a discount on purchases if I sign up for their credit card. This might drop the price to a more comfortable range. I used this offer years ago to purchase a camera. Paid off the card and cancelled it.
I've been eyeballing one myself :-)

I purchased mine presale for $99. I honestly would wait and purchase one for holiday gift giving as I'll bet they go one sale between now and the holidays.

We did the pre sell $99 Echo. I love mine and would buy another one for $99 to use downstairs but not for $179. Jen

Love my Echo. I also got it for $99. Love it for music, weather, timers, just asking it questions and LOVE the shopping list. If you can afford $179 I would go for it. I was going to buy a wireless speaker for music and there were $150 ish so this is that and more...

I would suggest you wait until Christmas to see if it goes on a Black Friday or Pre-Christmas lightning deal and then give it to him as a Christmas gift. It went down to $129 during their Christmas in July sale. It was $99 pre launch, and $150 just after launch if I recall correctly and then full price was $199 and has already been reduced to $179. So it's been on sale a few times already and then reduced in just the first year so I think chances are good for a holiday sale.
It IS a cool toy and I would love to have one for the other end of the house if another sale comes along, but I don't know that it's worth full retail, especially because the newest version does not include the remote and if you want it (not necessary but handy) it is a separate $30.
