Our state budget (PA) is being held hostage over funding for education, pensions, and other big ticket items. Schools districts are not getting any state money. Our district just put a moratorium on all extra spending and cancelled all field trips, competitions, etc. I am the gifted coordinator and I have five competitions in the next 6 weeks that my students have been preparing for for months. Now their hard work will be in vain. I can not ask the kiddos to pay for their expenses. They could never afford it and I can't shell out thousands of dollars with the hopes that I will possibly be reimbursed.
I wish politicians were held to the same standards as the rest of us. If I didn't do my job and argued constantly with my coworkers without being productive I would get fired. Because of their inability to compromise and be pro active I am going to have some very disappointed students who deserve the opportunities these politicians are taking from them.
I have been more than willing to take a pay freeze during our last contract. I have taken on many extra duties without compensation. I get it. Times are tough. But don't mess with my students! I am not a happy camper right now. And I know a couple of state representatives who are going to be seeing the ugly side of my temper in the coming days. You might want to say a few prayers for them!

I'm so sorry. I feel badly for your students as well. It will be a good learning experience for them--doing your best for yourself, life isn't fair, politicians suck rocks.
I totally agree that politicians shouldn't get to keep their offices if they don't do anything. There should be penalties--like their benefits get downgraded to those of our military veterans.

Our local school district's physics team won a competition and a chance to go to Thailand to compete for the US. They raised $33k on GFM and were able to go. Are you the Odyssey of the Mind coordinator? Our politicians are assholes. Honestly, they shouldn't get paid if they don't do their job.

The Post Gazette reported this morning that through a loophole, charter schools will get all of their funding though. Distressed school districts like McKeesport were expecting their payouts from the gambling fund which would help them get through the short term crisis and found out yesterday that instead, that money will go to pay the charter schools in their area.

I second the GoFundMe suggestion. Could you contact the local news? It would be a great way to advertise your GFM account.
I hope somehow, someway the kids are rewarded for their hard work.

Can you have the kids write in to the politicians individually? Especially the local ones. Ask them for a donation to the GFM! call me stupid, but I thought school budgets were done by the school year and funded before the year started. Maybe that's just the two states I have lived in. But then again in our current state, everything outside of classes are extracurricular (including sports) and none is funded by the state/county but all is funded through fundraising. Our PTA pays for field trips.
I suspect the state has specific written agreements/contracts with charter schools that districts have never required and that there is a legal reason why they must send them what was promised. Sucks they get first priority though!

truly. I am in pa also and work in social services. I truly believe the politicians should not be paid while they remain unable to pass a budget. the deadline is June 30th every year, it is not a surprise! Vital servicesls for many are affected by this, as well as the schools. It is sad and frustrating.

They could never afford it and I can't shell out thousands of dollars with the hopes that I will possibly be reimbursed. Just a thought.... Go to local businesses and ask if they will donate toward your students being able to go. I feel for you & your students. How unfair.

I heard a great idea on a radio talk show - until a budget is passed, all politician salaries and perks (state cars, etc) should be suspended. Also, and this is the best part - all liquor stores should be closed (they are state run in PA). That way, a lot of people who may not be affected by the budget holdup will suddenly have a reason to get interested and involved. Clamp down on people's access to liquor or lotto and all hell would break loose!
