SO and I are going to France next June for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. We are going to stay in Paris for a couple of days before heading to the race. We were originally thinking that we would just go back to Paris and stay for a few days, but we've both been before and thought it would be a good idea to go somewhere new.
We are having trouble deciding on Nice or Marseille. I think I'd prefer Nice. It looks a little nicer but it looks to be a little spendy. SO is a huge James Bond fun, so I thought it would be fun to take a bus to Monte Carlo for the day.
SO is leaning towards Marseille. It looks nice and is also less expensive.
I know next to nothing about either place, so I'd love to hear some opinions from the Peas who have been there. Which would you pick?
Thanks!!!

I would pick Nice and go to Monte Carlo. It's pretty cool. That said, I have not been to Marseille.

From Nice you can also travel to Eze or St. Paul de Vence, beautiful medieval hilltop villages. There are wonderful views of the Mediterranean/French Riviera from Castle Hill in Nice. I wouldn't bother going to Cannes.

Nice is more expensive, more cultured, cleaner. Marseille is the second largest city in France, and has lots of historical sites, cheaper restaurants (generally) and a busy port. It depends what you're looking for, I liked them both! Marseille always had the reputation of being a bit dirty and not as safe, but I think that has probably changed somewhat since I was last there. Check out Lonely Planet for in-depth info. .
Oh, and the beach in Nice is pebbles and shingle.

Anthony Bourdain just had an episode of his show that was filmed in Marseille. Maybe it can be watched online at CNN or it'll rerun. If you've never seen his show, he gives the local history, local foods, etc. You might get a feel for what it's like.

We stayed in Nice for two days and then went up to Grasse for a couple days on our honeymoon. Nice was beautiful! We loved Grasse! Great perfumeries and they ship reasonably to the US. We also did a canyoning trip - sliding down natural rock slides in the river. We had seen a thing on it during the Tour de France coverage and it sounded awesome, it was so much fun!
