I would first ask what they were making for dinner.

Something seasonal. Right now a pear or Apple torte (edited - don't know if "torte" is what I am thinking of

If I wanted to impress them, an eclair torte or an angelfood pudding torte. Otherwise, I'd probably whip up a batch of brownies (from a box, but fancied up with chocolate chips or nuts or something) or cookies (I like the toll house bar recipe on the bag).
Eclair torte is basically graham crackers, instant vanilla pudding, coolwhip, and chocolate frosting.
Angel food torte is basically angelfood cake, instant chocolate pudding, whipping cream, and a skor bar (or other candy bar of your choice.)
If either of those sounds good to you, let me know and I will type out the recipe for you. You'll want to make them both the day before. (They way I make them, they're both something I sort of improvised up myself based on desserts I used to buy at the grocery store deli.)
Another thing I've done: buy a premade graham crust. Make up a box of instant vanilla fat free/sugar free pudding. Let that set a bit (longer than the 5 minutes if you can). Fold some thawed cool whip into the pudding. Spoon into crust. Top with fresh berries (or pie topping in a pinch). You can serve it right away, but the longer it can sit, the firmer the filling will be. You could even put it in the freezer while you eat dinner.

My daughter makes a great bread pudding made with white chocolate pudding - it is totally awesome but too rich to eat often. Recipe

Honestly, I'd go to the nice French bakery in my neighborhood and pick something up, because while I can make perfectly competent cookies and banana bread, I am not generally someone who can put together a dessert that would impress anyone.
If you forced me to cook, I would probably try to make fancy cupcakes with liquor and so forth. It would likely go badly.

I'd bring a pound cake or brownies depending on what was being served and what the friends like.
My dh and I have some great new neighbors that just moved from NC, and I'd really like to bake them a Southern pound cake from my great aunt's 'secret' award winning recipe. I'm still tweaking it because she used butter flavour crisco (doctors said that crisco was healthier for you than butter because of the saturated fat. Nobody knew about transfats.)
The neighbors are really excited about trying the different foods down here. I think they'll be a lot of fun.

Depends on how many people and how fancy it is. An easy fancy cake is a yule log. You can make the Pepin recipe which is flourless for the gluten free crowd and use whipped cream to fill it. It bakes in 15 minutes. Last week I brought an apple pie to a Canadian Thanksgiving dinner. That sucker had 10 lbs. of apples in it! Summer is perfect for key lime pie. Macerated strawberries on pound cake is nice.

I wouldn't make anything. I stink at baking. I'd go buy something fancy. Or I'd buy whatever sounded good to me at the time I was shopping (which would most likely be on the way over to my friend's house.)

I LOVE Emeril's Luscious Lemon Bars or something like that. Don't remember the exact name, but these are delicious! I normally don't like lemon bars, think they taste mostly like eggs. But this recipe is full of lemon juice, lemon zest and a bit of Limoncello. Amazing!

Because I am *that* into cooking these days.

How are you at making meringue because this would look very impressive Spanische Windtorte (an Austrian dessert, obviously!) it was a challenge on the Great British Bake off, Meringue, double cream, strawberries, raspberries.

Probably a Pavlova or Apple Crumble - unless it was to impress in which case I'd have to search for another recipe.....possibly the one JoP mentioned - that sounds good!

Depends if it's a fancy impressive dinner party or "hey, come on over, we're putting some brats on the grill." It's usually the latter, so I'd probably make two kinds of bars - maybe chocolate chip blondies and some apple bars. For a fancy or holiday dinner, I'd probably make a cheesecake.

It depends on what is for dinner, which friends, and if kids will be present. If all of that is unknown, then some type of cake or brownies.

Pumpkin pie with "hard sauce". It's that time of the year! "Hard Sauce" is a blend of butter, light brown sugar and sherry. It is what makes pumpkin pie so special. Going to take this with us next weekend when we have dinner with friends.

I was in this situation last weekend and I took pumpkin dip (pumpkin, cream cheese, icing sugar, spices) and then apples and ginger snaps (out of a package) to dip. They loved it.

Honestly, I would probably drive to the Amish bakery down the road and pick up two pies...a fruit one and a pudding one. Or a pumpkin pie and a package of assorted cookies.

Depends on my mood and how much time I want to commit to the endeavor. I love to bake, so I have a pretty long list of things to choose from, but most of the time the person who requests the dessert has a vague idea of what they want.
One thing that seems to be universally liked is a trifle-and you can make them as easy or as complicated as you want. There are also a good number of combinations to choose from. The one I make is brownie, chocolate mousse, whipping cream and some kind of candy chopped and sprinkled on top. You can make the brownies homemade, the mousse by hand, the whipping cream with your mixer-or you can substitute brownies from a box, some kind of pudding/mousse mix-but always use homemade whipping cream and people act like it is the most amazing thing. As others have said, you can use any combo you want (white cake, chocolate cake, yellow cake, etc.,) add fruit, use puddings...
Bonus points is that is that looks like you spent hours making it.

I'm assuming this is a casual dinner. I'd make brownies. Sure, they're common, but have you ever taken a plate of brownies anywhere and had to bring some home or throw some out? Everyone loves brownies. If you want it to be extra special, bring along a carton of ice cream.

I'm honestly not a food snob, but there's no way I would take these to a friend's house. Apart from the berries, there's not a single fresh ingredient. If this was the extent of my dessert skills, I would take berries and fresh cream, or buy good quality ice-cream. No coolwhip or instant pudding!
